Had a meltdown yesterday

Played with a friend from work yesterday and at the turn I realised that things were going pretty well.

Followed that up on the back 9 with a couple of pars and bogeys and by the time I got to the 17th tee I realised I was on for a low 90's round possibly! Given my previous best was 104 I was somewhat excited!

What happened next was an absolute nightmare!

scored a 10 on the par 5 and then an 8 on the par 3!!

Leaving me with 102!!!!

still my best score but so so close to breaking 100 :(

So what did you do different on 17 and 18?

Your ability clearly means you did not play perfect golf up until that point, did you act, think, feel different for the last two holes? What was going through your mind on 16 that different to 17?

What is "realising" you had a good score going? Why did that do things different on 17 compared to 10 after you knew you had a good front 9?

Once you have answered those then you can answer the real question...

How can you not think like you did on 17 and 18 again next time you get there with plenty of points/shots to break 100 in the bag.

A bit more detail might help, talk us through those last 18 strokes, one by one. We might be able to spot something in there

Pretty much everyone goes through the same growing pains. I wouldn't let it worry. And you'll do it again. Even pro's go through the same tightening up down the stretch. Learn to recognise it and have some coping strategies to deal with it, e.g. a good pre-shot routine to focus on will make a difference.

Your not a proper golfer until you have blown a great position on the last few holes :D

It all a cruel part of leaning this game, you will get over it and smash it

Spot on. I still cringe at the memory of being 2 under par with 3 holes left at my place. Sub 70 (social) round for the first time ever. Cue Bogey, Bogey, Dbl Bogey. Oh the memories.

Don't worry about it. It has happened to all the greats, and many of us too. You have to be in a position to win before you can throw it all up, so just keep getting into that position and it will all work out in the end. One shot at a time.

One of those things, we've all done it. The more often you put yourself in that position the better you'll deal with it. Have a think about what you did differently and how you were thinking the last 2 holes. You'll find plenty of stuff you can learn from for next time.

Something Justin Rose said which applies to all levels is that you have to realise that just because you're nervous doesn't mean you're going to hit a bad shot. Indeed Jack Nicklaus said he loved nerves, because if he was nervous it meant he was in contention and to do that he had to be playing well. These guys feed off nerves, if you don't have them its cos you're having a mare and not near a good score.

Realise that you've played yourself into that position and just cos you're there doesn't mean you're going to hit a bad one and you're half way there to closing it out.

Nothing beats that pit of the stomach feeling you get when you know a good score is there to be had. The more you experience get of it the more you can handle it. Take the positives away. For my two penneth try not to think too much about the score as you are playing and take each hole and each shot on its merits and let the final total take care of itself at the end. You might be surprised

I made the mistake last year of adding up my score after 17 holes. I'd scored 87 and only needed a bogey at the last to get my best ever score and a handicap of about 23. Ended up driving OOB twice and scoring a 9. It wasn't nerves, more like lack of concentration and assuming I was home and dry.

Now I never add up until the end.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have no idea what I did different but I was hitting it off the hosel and my putting was horrendous!

I guess I should be happy in the fact that I still hit my best ever score.

Still an enjoyable round though and that's what it's all about!
