Both Mashleyr7 and I put our cards in from H4H but I understand that they won't accept them for handicapping as there won't be a CSS calculated.

It brasses me off that CONGU don't appear to have a problem like this covered, so that winning a comp with over 100 players doesn't earn it's just rewards, surely the brains in golf management could devise a way to cut a good score!

Any views?

Would you have put the card in if it was rubbish and would have got a 0.1 back?

Probably wouldn't have bothered Rick to fish it out and post it to me and it wouldn't have had any real affect on this years final handicap. I would have thought that a cut is more beneficial to our members generally and would have seen me playing off a handicap that I earned. Had it been at my own club it may also have triggered another ESR as well, but I do understand your point

A couple of thoughts:

  1. Can the card not be entered as a supplementary?
  2. If not, then if Rick has all the cards, or better still, scores in a spreadsheet, I can calculate the CSS for you as I have a spreadsheet that does the calculations.

That question is key imo. In reality you played a round without a card in hand for handicap purposes - so the pressure is somewhat off...

It didn't feel like that Amanda, I have worked my socks off during the year to improve, I had a cut at the end of August with an ESR too. I played well at the forum meets at Chart Hills, won the afternoon at Woburn, did well at Gainsborough and followed it up at West Hill - on none of those games did I feel that the pressure was off as I was trying just as hard to win them all as I have my home comps!

Agreed and we all try to play our best at such events but they're not qualifiers and we know that from the outset so the pressure is different. I played well in the Swindle today. I was trying hard - I always do - BUT it wouldn't have occurred to me to submit my card for handicap purposes. You start knowing 100% you can't get 0.1 back so the pressure in that respect is off.

It can't be a supplementary as I understand. I assumed it would be a General Play Adjustment with thre golf committee knowing that I was plsying better than my handicap. The Secretary, I understand was going to ask whether a CSS worked out for the comp but would they be able to call it "qualifying" ? If they will, then I should be very grateful for your offer Anthony.

I guess you would be wasting your time as the competition would still not have been run by a recognised body for handicapping purposes, which assume the real issue here.

I can see why they wouldnt allow it - cant put it in as a supplementry because its not on your home course and it was a handicap nonqualifier. They can take it into account for any yearly review but cant adjust your handicap from those rounds alone.

1. Cannot be a supplementary as they must be completed on own course.
2. Committee's are normally unlikely to accept a card from a comp that they do not know what the rules of the comp where and if it was completed under the full rules of golf, ie: no gimmes etc.

I agree. How would you treat the scores of those without official handicaps? As Doublebogey says, you have to be on the approved list of organisations to hold qualifiers. The best bet, if you have a score better than handicap, is to ask your club to take it into account on Annual Review.

Supplementary - no chance.

From Congu:

Which type of competitions can be ‘Handicap Qualifying’?

The Handicapping system in fact defines the types of competition which cannot be handicap qualifiers. Those competitions that cannot be handicap qualifiers are

Competitions not played over either 9 or 18 holes
Competitions not run in line with the R&A rules of golf. (Example, competitions limited to 3 clubs)
Competitions where a competitor may choose how many rounds he will play or which day he will play
Any pairs events (such as Fourball Better-ball, etc).
Stableford or Par competitions played off less than full handicap
Competitions run by organisations not recognised by the authorities (such as Golf Societies).

I agree, but Mashleyr7 and I confirmed that we played off the white markers, on a measured course and putted out on every hole, but, I do recognise that not everyone putted out, some used illegal DMD,s etc and therefore a CSS might not be accurate enough

I played off the wrong handicap but that is another matter.

Sorry to hear your Club will not accept you card Chris. I could do with more shots off you !! Perhaps they can take the card into account for an annual review as Rosie says.

If youre that confident that you are playing to the wrong handicap then you should be able to play below it next time during a qualifying comp when your handicap is at risk.

But then I would be far less likely to get it adjusted officially, what would be the point?
