Given that high handicaps start at 16.1 (according to some), do you have a limit on h/cap for full membership? At my course, you can only apply for full membership if you play off less than 22 (for men) and have been a member for a full calendar year from the renewal date.

Is excluding the very high handicappers from weekend golf fair? Is it usual? I play with plenty of slow golfers, and plenty who hack up the course off way lower handicaps than 22, who I would happily see banned from playing at busy times. Why pick on 22? Is this the norm?

That will encourage new members Murph!

My club has a maximum starting handicap of 24 but you can then move up after playing a few comps.

But does the club actually bar people who are above? What happens if you go up from 22 do they chuck you out?

Nope, once you are in, you are in. If you go up from 22, you are still ok.

You can join off a higher h/cap, but cannot apply for full membership ti it comes down to 22.

Seems to me that someone at your place lsot out to a 28 hcp player in a strokeplay comp and thought "I'll get them back for this"

Since CONGU allow up to 28 for Gents, I think your place is being a little overzealous about it. ;)

Attended a presentation from the EGU a couple of weeks ago. One of the themes being pushed in these times of low memberships was to look seriously at the "Barriers to membership" that your club has. Say no more.

You have not said what you think of it mate?

I like the idea of it - but it is harsh.

Are you allowed to bring a 28 handicapper to pay and play? I know a few clubs who do it for Pay and Players which I totally understand.

Sounds like a completely ridiculous idea...

my official handicap is 22.7, so playing off 23. In the last two weeks i've played a couple of top courses including Gullane and have scored comfortably below 90 on each time out. Each round bang on around 3 hours and yet i wouldn't be able to play at your club because of my "official" handicap...

As well as all the benefits of the handicap system, it also has it's failings, such as clubs like yours not letting people like me play just because of a number.

I'd rather play elsewhere.

ps. i know my handicap is high, but that'll change next year :)

Keep the hackers out! 12 handicap and under..... :(

Only joking!

Seems quite silly to me. In these dark, recession hit times you'd have thought all clubs would be relaxing membership rules - not tightening them.

It is a rule we have always had. We still have a waiting list for joining, so I guess as a policy it isn't putting many off.

You can bring guests of any ability, no h/cap certificates required, but you are responsible for your guests behaviour.

My view? I don't know, it is just the way it has always been, and has never really affected me, as I joined off 12 anyway.

A mate of mine I used to play with on Fridays had been a member for 10 years as a 5 day playing off 23, but wasn't really fussed about 7 day any way. He eventually got in, as the General Manager felt sorry for him, but then left to go and live in Fl.

It just doesn't seem in the general spirit of things. Wondered if other clubs had similar.

I know of 1 club in my area that will only let people with a 24 h/c or lower join. I personally dont want to join it because i know of closer, cheaper and better clubs closer to me but a mate of mine is thinking of joining it when his membership at his current club runs out. He is a 27 h/c and wants to get down by then but doesn't play any club comps.

Can you get your h/c down without playing comps or do you need to play them in order to get cut?

No, you need to play in comps to get cut.

oh right that wont happen then. He only plays fridays with a couple of mates (including me sometimes). To be honest for the amount he plays he would probaly have been better off not joining a club and just paying the green fee every week but you cant tell him that.

With a bit of luck when i join a club next year i will get a lower h/c and be able to rub it in. Did i mention he is also my boss :D

Don't think its a great idea. 22 seems a random figure too. I can understand a 24 (old limit) being there historically. I would be annoyed if I wanted to play and contribute to the club with my hard cash to be told I couldn't on account of my handicap. Seems strange a tad discrminatory to me. Still if you have a waiting list then I guess its either a very good course and club and people want to be a part of it or there is method in the madness

Does seem a little discriminatory but as its a Private club (I assume) probably perfectly legal.
Why do certain parts of the Golfing world get stuck so far up themselves? The few "old" clubs that don't allow women, juniors or those without a 7 figure bank balance, you know the sort.
To have Full Membership only open to certain handicaps just doesn't make sense. Are they saying a 23 handicappers money is worse than a 22's? Just because you've got a handicap of 22, does that make you "better" than a 23?
Like Murph it would never have affected me (began on 15 and never went higher) but, to be honest, I wouldn't like to be associated with it.

For a club that clearly can pick and choose who joins, this seems a fairer basis to decide who can and cannot join than most other methods used at golf clubs, e.g. class, gender, profession, associates, bank balance etc.
