My wife has just got a job at Esporta who own gyms and healthclubs across the UK. She gets free membership once she has been there three months and I get it too so I'm looking to do a bit on the running machine to get a bit of stamina back.

I have shoulder problems so weights aren't a great idea but I might do some rowing machine work and swim

I steer well clear of the bikes as the geometry is all wrong (cycling is my other sport). So 40 minutes on a tread mill (I know I should run outside, but it is cold and wet, and my physio tells me not to run on a camber as my knees are shot), and then some weights (not that you would notice) and some core work.

Wrong Wrong Wrong!

Never ever do sit ups - they are so old fashioned and put far too much stress on several areas of the body

Tricep Dips - 40? WHY???

Whats the point of below?

40 mins on the treadmill
10 mins on the bike
10 mins on the cross trainer

Bulk out? Whats that?

Bigger muscles = slower swing, unless you have been trained professionally be a strength and conditioning professional. However, at your age your far too young too worry about any of this.

Connor,

I wish I was blessed with that much free time - surely your rigorous training regime lasts over an hour and a half a day - how do you manage to stick to it and fit it in each day?

Recently I've been exercising using a balance ball, which is supposed to boost core-stability. So far I have seen no significant difference!

I'm not too sure how beneficial the treadmill will be to your golfing game because it is cardiovascular exercise which has the effect of lowering the blood pressure and burning calories. So if bulking up is the game, this might not be the most effective.

For bulking up I would suggest reducing your carbohydrate intake and replacing it with high protein foods. To boost muscle definition, you need to complete free weight exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, barbell rows, pull ups and bar dips.

Hope this helps!

Well I run to stay fit and try to keep the beer keg at bay, not because my golf will benefit. I think the core work might help golf, but probably not, as I don't do enough of it, and I couldn't bulk up if I tried. Just not got the build for it.

Some cardio on an eliptical trainer; some core strength work, stomach, obliques, shoulders and back; lots of stretching and flexibility work, used to do martial arts so i`m quite bendy

I used to be at the gym 5 days a week minimum but since taking up golf have been going less and less.
Like people have mentioned if you're bulking up make sure you stretch properly. I never did and my lack of flexibility isn't helping my efforts to improve at this game.

Had gym membership once, I lost pounds....about £35 a month.

But seriously, I just could not get fired up to go to some smelly hole, full of overweight 50 plus something or other females, or twenty someting year old males trying to prove something!

I'm too old to worry too much about how I look, and too young to worry about not being able to keep up!
