Don't know why, but found myself wondering recently what might constitute the guttsiest shot in golf - in general terms, not specific shots.

After much internal deliberation I have decided that the shot that requires the most mental fortitude must be the next chip after a shanked pitch, when your brain is frazzled and you're wondering whether or not you're going to spend the rest of eternity circling the green but never actually finding the putting surface.

Anyone care to disagree??

Agreed, that one is nasty as is the second shot after a duffed drive off the first with a crowd on the tee.

I'm with GB, especially if you have to cross to the adjacent fairway to play it.

At the other end of the scale, you've played a decent round but duffed the shot into the lake. Even with the penalty you are still on for a good score. You root in your bag and have only one ball left . . .

That water shot you are talking about is like describing the approach to our 2nd green, or where you would play a penalty drop from, water is in front and to right of green, bareish, downhill lie. Nightmare for most people especially as you would have to play the same shot again if you went in the water.

I've a lot of sympathy for this one, furyk.
On Sunday I was having a lot of trouble getting on the old dance floor (after, I may say, some towering drives) not helped by the company of a junior we'd invited to play along with us (14ish?) who predictably spat them on the green from way out. When he also began to advise me on which club/shot would do the trick, needless to say things got even worse ..
He was also polite and well-behaved - no excuse at all for me to put him over my knee for telling his grandmother how to suck eggs ;)

No question the shot after a shank. For those who've never been inflicted with the 'Shermans' you could be the toughest meanest hardest bastard in the world but stand over that shot and you just become an uncontrolled jibbering wreck whose co-ordination and brain turn to scrambled aggs. It is truly dreadful. Even if you make that next shot the seed has been sown for the day and you are just waiting in fear for the next one every time you get over the ball.
All the other shots mentioned are tough but there is no shot like the one following a shank. If you are playing the next shot after 2 shanks in a row you may as well go home - they're here to stay! I should know!

For me id say having to make par at sawgrass's 17th.
Locally though, the Hilton Templepatrick Championship course just outside Belfast has a 450 yard finish hole with a rather large lake, walking onto the last tee box, feeling a strong gust into my face and realising that I can not score worse than a 4 to score a 75 and be in with a chance of winning the competition.
4 wood off the tee and lay up in front of the lake (lake is 260 of the teebox, managed a gorgeous draw ending up 15-20 yards short in the middle of the fairway) then having this monster for a second shot. 5 wood out (was expecting to hit 4/5 iron!)

Then the moment I hit it I knew it was a decent strike and held my breath watching it heading to the left edge of the green and drawing ever so slightly bac towards the flag. distance was spot on into the wind and letting out a huge sigh of relief as it hits the green and stops almost without a bounce. Anyway strolled up and managed to roll it down to 2 feet and holed out for a 4, probably the best round Ive ever had, Ive scored below par gross before but purely for lack of mistakes this one counts well up there, its not my home course either.
Thats my ball on the green, I had my Fuji s9500 camera along for the ride.

This hits home that its not a playable trap should you come down short!

Definitely for me it's the pitch from a bare lie over a bunker with another bunker or water waiting on the other side of the green.

i agree with the short pitch over the water, the 14th at my club has water before the green and i hate the second shot. It is only a short hole easy really, say 4 iron off the tee and then a three quarter lob wedge in over about 20 yards of water and i brick it every time, has to be the hardest shot on the course !!
