Solheim Cup 18th fairway Wie in the fairway near a divot claims GUR--not marked and the ref allows relief and indicates the area will now be marked for the afternoon.

Does anyone think this is an idiotic ruling?

Would a European have got the same relief?

Definition of GUR in the rules of golf;-

“Ground under repair” is any part of the course so marked by order of the Committee or so declared by its authorised representative.

You can get relief if it is "declared" then. Think the European argument is that it wasn't declared to THEM.

Very dubious. WIe should have just played the shot as it lay in my opinion. She always makes these bad decisions. Shame. She played great today for a change.

Think she was at it there, even Rosie Jones commentating said she should have played it ,always contoversy everytime she plays ,and how slow is she 20 minutes to play 2 shots on 18 over 6 hours ridicules ,even on a hack oout to the fairway her and the caddie spoke for ages about. Pick out a wadge and get into play nothing hard about that me thinks.

I didn't see it but from what you say "she was near a divot and claimed GUR" what in the name of god is that all about. Just goes to show that these so called pro's of today really do want lifted and laid. Since when did a divot come under GUR. There wouldn't be enough white chalk to cover every divot on our course let alone every course.

These pro's need to come to Ireland during the winter months and play real golf.

At the end of the day she asked for the ruling and got it in her favour. She stepped aside and let the officials get on with it so I think she deserves some credit for that even if she probably was trying it on to start with. At the end of the day Europe won the hole so in the greater scheme of things it was academic.

At least it will be marked for this afternoon so no need to repeat the drama

Only one word for it.

CHEATING. If it's not marked/signed on a local rule as GUR, then it's not GUR!

I've not seen this but from what I can gather, Wie was in the last match. If so, how can the officials change the course after everyone else had begun playing? If the area should have been GUR then it should have been marked for the rest of the competition but after all had played it in the first session.
Its in a similar vein to moving tee markers after the start of play. - you just don't do it.
Did any of the other players land in the same area? Did they request GUR - they probably looked and played on.

Ludicrous. Its made the whole thing a joke.

On this occasion I dont think she is to blame, yes she is turning out to be one of these tryers too much, but when she gets the result she required as a result of weak authority, who can blame her? But 6 hr round of golf, please please will the R&A USGA PGA and every bugger else put a stop to this stupid waste of time. I think whenever golfers play at a 6 hr pace, marshalls should Tazer them!

The comment from the American official was that they had noted a couple of area's around the golf course which they decided that they would allow a free drop as it would be considered GUR. However they neglected to tell anyone as they felt that no one would ever get to those particular parts of the golf course.

If anyone is to blame it's the American officials, however being slightly biased it's yet another example of the Americans changing the rules when it suits them.

On the positive side Wie's shot after the drop when right into a bunker ........ :)

So what will they try next. "Oh dear me this is a big green and my ball is on the far side. Please mrs Rules Official could you have the hole re-cut three feet from my ball please. Afterall you didn't expect anyone to be this far away from the original hole did you"

I Think the rather spineless Rules officials mught just consider it !

Completly out of order. GUR was not marked and was not on the tournament local rules info so it should not have been given. After all it was Wie who put the ball way out in an area that wasn't considered as necessary to be GUR 'cause they were'nt supposed to be that far off line ! :D

I think she was wrong to ask.
She got a bad break, she landed in a divot.
Tough. Hit it and move on
It's lucky there wasn't a huge rock close by
