My uncle passed away recently, he was an amazing guitarist and I have inherited his accoustic guitar. To be honest I have always wanted to learn an instrument as I am a teacher and it would be useful, so this seems the perfect reason to start. Can anyone recommend a starter guide or website to follow that is actually helpful? I can't read music!!

Justin Guitar is a great start, one thing I'd advise though I'd have plenty patience and put in plenty practice. It takes time but it does click

Keep seeing Yousician ads on youtube https://yousician.com/ . Not free I dont think but looks decent. In my day we got tuition books, seems so much easier to learn online nowadays.

If you learn G, C and D major chords you will have Knockin on heavens door for a start!

start with major G C D A chords if you master these there are thousands of songs you can play.

try to pick songs you like or know it's much easier to learn if you know the tune .
youtube is brilliant put song you like plus lesson in search box.

also have a look at Chordie on the net google it.

If you have a music teacher they should be able to point you in the right direction.

learn the Pentatonic scales it really helps you can learn on YouTube.

As others have said, YouTube is a great starting point. It does take a while to pick it up but it does just click eventually. Brace yourself for sore fingers too whilst you're learning. However, the skin soon firms up though!

What guitar (make and model) will you be learning on?

You can now learn almost any song from YouTube now. Imagine learning is far easier than when I did.
You can learn songs, or you can learn playing guitar and play every song.

Unfortunately I am weak and learn songs;-(

Also recommend Justin. I have some of his books as well, makes his videos even easier.

You would need to learn some chords to start with, but there are a fair few sites that will teach you to play along and show you the chords and notes to play.

learning to do something is often about repetition, but actually playing a song you like is much more enjoyable, so well worth it.

Been playing 18 years and I tried Yousician and thought it was completely useless.

You should learn to read tabs on ultimateguitar.com - they simply tell you where to put your fingers and then off you go.

Learn power chords first and the odd easy tune. Build up some callouses on your fingers - they will hurt at first!

Above all stick at it - its really hard at first (like golf), but once you start getting better its so addictive!

I would seriously recommend a few lessons to start with. A tutor will teach you the basics now and stop any bad habits forming which will hamper you later on as you start improving.

Learn to fingerpick rather than just always strum - makes for a far better listening experience...imho
