First ever time in the pairs matchplay competition at my club and me and my partner are 5 up at the 9th tee and our club's lightning klaxon goes off! Course closed for rest of the day (it's 6 o clock by this time). Once back at the clubhouse we phone the duty officer to see what happens next (i.e. replay or carry on from where we left off another day) he says we have to do whatever is agreed by the 4 of us. Needless to say it was not easy to come to an agreement as they were 5 down and pushing for a rematch from A/S from the 1st and we wanted to carry on 5 up from the 9th.

In the end, my partner in his infinite wisdom decided to suggest that we concede the 9th and we play 9 holes starting 4 up. I was not amused, but in the end felt obliged to agree as everyone else was happy. Trouble is, one of our opponents is one of the best golfers in the club and we just managed to cope with the weather better than them, I can't help feeling that we're asking for trouble by giving them a hole for free! :(

In a word.... GAAAARGH!!!

Well I'd be looking to continue from the 9th tee five up if I was in your shoes. Committee have effectively suspended play after sounding claxon, so, you can't continue the match until the all clear is given by the committee. If this means coming back another day, then so be it.

I would concur with that but if you have conceded the 9th now then there is not much you can do about it.....

Surprised this is not cover in the rules of the comp.

Personally i believe you should recommence play on the 9th tee with you 5 up as that was the score when play was halted by the weather.
But 4 up with 9 to play is not a bad position ot be in.

Amen to that, thats the rule our clubs sticks to.

I agree completely, but my partner stuck me in a difficult position by making me the only one who wasn't agreeing.

4 up isn't so bad, but the next 4 holes are "The Hill" and are notoriously difficult. They will definitely favour the low handicapper, even with our shot on each hole. Let's just say I'd be slightly more comfortable being 5 up!

I'd bat it straight back to the committee to make the decision and tell them you felt pressurised into the decision. My understanding is that once the klaxon goes, the match is suspended from that point and so effectively you can't do anything to alter the state of the game as it was at that time

I'm with most of the responders so far, what a kop out by the duty officer!

You should start again n the 9th Tee 5 up. That's the state of play when the klaxon sounded, is it not?

The only other solution I'd take is the opposition conceding the entire game!

If the klaxon is sounded then play is SUSPENDED from that point. But you have now conceded the 9th so no going back. Why did your partner suggest to concede the 9th anyway? Seems a bit odd.

Rule 6-8d
Procedure When Play Resumed
Play must be resumed from where it was discontinued...

Duty officer was wrong - there's no choice about it.

In matchplay there's a choice as to when to actually stop playing - ie either immediately or on completion of hole (although there may be a requirement for immediate halt from the committee). But re-starting has to be from where you left off.

But if you conceded the ninth, then tough - you start 4 up on 10
