I've been looking at new houses this last 3 mths and without exception I have been disappointed in the garage sizes:(

House builders seem to think we'll be happy to squeeze our expensive pride and joy's in then breathe out and suck it in to get out the door- while ensuring the door doesnt get scraped:mad:

Double garages are just as bad as the f@nnies (house builders) put a pillar in the middle which makes the space either side tiny again:mad: Whats wrong or so hard about a single o/head door with no pillar like the yanks have been doing for ever?

Unbelievably one 'estate' we visited they admitted to getting it wrong as a normal car couldnt possibly fit in it, they reduced all the prices by £5k for their cock-up but it meant you only had a large cupboard attached to your expensive dwelling.

If you can get your expensive metal box inside you then have nada room to put anything else, so you fabricate ingenious ways of hanging bikes from the ceiling and heavy tools from the walls, until one day you find something has 'slipped off' the wall and dented your expensive metal box....

So everyone just does the same now and parks outside their garage as doing anything else is more hassle than its worth...

rant over........now I'm off to buy a huf house and have a proper garage http://www.huf-haus.com/en/the-huf-house/gallery.html

....and breathe:whoo:

I feel your pain! As a developer I only put garages in if they are there already and then have to re do most of them as they are ridulsly small sometimes. :( Tend to use nice wood car ports and then add a nice annex to them (minimal planning needed!)

I like these Huff houses and Im looking into doing one on the next project if the financials work. Im assuming you can get some grants etc from the Govnt due to their eco rating? I have seen a couple in the flesh and they are impressive but expensive to build..... Im not sure they are warm enough for the UK market??

Triple glazing as standard, sealant thermally insulated and argon gas inbetween, warm in winter cool in summer, less noise....and German engineering and efficiency, I believe its about 7 days to construct in walk in condition after the founds:whoo::whoo:

Sound and look fantastic I must say. I suppose you secure a plot get planning and they arrive and construct whilst removing copious amounts of cash from you wallet! :)

they dont arrive until your wallet is bare......however, trips to the facility to agree and see construction looks interesting...for some. Did you see the Grand Designs episode with them? puts a lot of British house builders to shame, even the work ethic.

Most integral / attached garages don't get used for keeping cars in , their usually full of kids toys, bikes, and stuff that will never be used again. or converted into a extra room. Estimates given on request .

Yep, quite true. Nobody in our street puts a car in them. We are lucky that we have wide drives that can take 2 or 3 cars. I recently cleaned my garage out and putting a car in it was now a possibility. Around the same time i was getting some car insurance quotes and one provider (Sainsbury's I think) quoted me more to put the car in the garage overnight than leaving it on the drive. They said the amount of claims they get from people damaging cars reversing in/out of narrow garages has gone way up.
