Grip Size

Interesting read. Thanks.

I have undersized Ping 'Aqua' grips on my irons (and soon to be wedges), contrary to what my pro suggested. They feel more comfortable and I get the feeling of having more control with them vs standard size grips.

I do have little girl hands though.

Interesting stats in this article regarding grip size, http://www.golf.com/instruction/youre-playing-wrong-size-grips
According to this its a simple fix for straightness and length, if only it was that easy ;)

Interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing.

I, personally have to disagree though, based solely on my own experience.

A while back I used Lamkin's website to find my own correct size grip. The Lamkin web tool suggested that I am a standard size Lamkin grip (0.58) with 3 layers of tape. As the grip (0.58) was going onto a True Temper shaft (0.600) I was effecively playing 4 layers of tape.

When I came to regrip my MP63's a few weeks back, this time I decided o consult my pro.

I told him what I had been playig and the first thing was measure my hands and compare them to the Ping fitting chart (He is a Ping accredited fitter). This Had me smack bang on the line between Ping's white and gold grip.

Tried both and opted for the gold grip which is 1/32 over size, or 2 layers of tape under a standard grip (3 layers if you count grip tape). Brought some Golf Pride full cord tour warps (0.60) and fitted them with to the above spec.

This didn't feel comfortable at all. Felt so skinny and thin compared to what I was used to. Didn't feel right to be at all.

I've continued with them for thwe last month or so. They still feel skinny but I'm hitting the ball better.

I would have to agree with this, I have big hands and have used an oversize grip but find theres a lack of feel with this grip. When I started playing all grips were standard (rarely taped) and since I learned to play with the standard grip it just feels more comfortable.

My own findings on this: I was playing standard grips (Golf Pride New Decade), but they felt small, so I got my local golf shop to increase the tape layers, so went from grip tape and grip to 4 layers (inc grip tape) and standard grip, this did feel better.

But when I got fitted for my wedges, the fitter measured my hands and I was a gnats breath off midsize, so I decided I'd give mid-size a go. What a difference, I could grip the club without feeling like I was strangling it. So I immediately got all my irons grips changed to midsize as well and again the difference it made was brilliant.

I found I could hold the club without putting a death grip on it, I had much better feeling, more control but more over it just simply felt a lot better.

So for me Midsize will be the way forward.

Interesting thanks for the post. I find 1 wrap more than standard is good for my girl hands, however i was experimenting with soft tennis tape, which has a lot more give, so this obviously has some effect.

I try to have a balance in terms of size and also softness.

I would love to find the 5 shots my grips are costing me but I am not sure I am going to find a pro who is going to give me the time to play with x amount of different grips on a similar club.

As said above if you try tennis grip tape above your normal grip it can be good for testing purposes. Sports direct to 3 rolls for about 3 quid.

Ye, this could be an interesting experiment. How did it shake out for you? did the tennis tape make you change grips or stay as you were?

In addition to my previous post.

As my previous grip was larger than required, it had the knock on effect of causing a grip issue (Double overlap on top hand).

Since moving to a smaller, more suited grip, no further issues of this nature.

According to the 'study' incorrect grips are costing you 5 shots!

You'd be off scratch!!

Best get the correct grip and speak to the handicap committee and get my handicap corrected - will take the study as proof so they know it's 100% correct :D

Added 1 tape layer to std grips.i guess actual bigger grips are less forgiving so might not be accurate but gives a feel.

Think I need to get my grips checked, knocking of 5 shots from your handicap just by having the right grip sounds like a no brainer to me. Is it 5 full shot or 5 x .1 does anybody know.

That's almost my story exactly.

The midsize grip with a second layer of tape, make me feel as though I am not gripping too tightly or strangling the club. Did have some normal grips and extra layers of tape to apparently make it up to the same thickness, but I could still feel the difference, so mid size grips going forward for me as well.
