My budget set of clubs felt like I was holding straws and did not instil confidence so off to AG I went for some advice. Following a brief custom fit session they suggested a change of grips to that of 'jumbo', so I did. Although the clubs feel great to hold I now slice the ball more than I did before, could 'jumbo' be too large? I have since found information on the web that suggests my hand size to be 'Standard + 3 wraps' or 'midsize'.

How do you know what grip size you are and could the jumbo grips increase my slicing?

Regards, Stu

Yes they could, as bigger grips inhibit hand action. Not sure how you find out how big you need, but too thin and you get a very active hands swing, that can lead to hooks, and too big and you could get slicing.

On the other hand, it could just be your swing, which is most likely.

See a pro, and get it sorted. He can advise about grips too. Not sure I would trust AG with this.

don't really know but tried to work this out. If your right hand position remains the same (eg thumb straight down the centreline) then to get your left hand to the position where the thumb is in the crease of your lifeline it would have to rotate more. Would that do it?

Did they try and flog you any Nicklaus gear when you were there? Sorry cant help about grip size, all the online custom fitting charts work it out due to your glove size. Don’t seem very accurate to me as I like a really tight glove but I certainly aint got small hands.

The third finger of the glove hand should just touch and no more the thumb pad when holding the club, any gap and the grips are too big, if finger pressing into pad grips are too small.

Thats right.

I got fitted at AG. They did not measure my hand, just had a look at my left hand grip and reckoned two extra layers of tape. When my clubs came in they modified the 6 iron only to let me try it out and decide. Decided i liked it and took all the others back to be modified at no extra cost. Could not complain really

Should really be measured with a ruler, finger length, palm lentgh etc. But birdieman has it spot on!

Is that bit correct? If, for example, your standard grip is more at right angles to the shaft, then your fingers will go further round so absolute measurement with ruler not as good as fingers to pad?

Obv I am no profesional but once the guy who custom fit my driver for me had seen my grip, he took two sets of measurements. My finger length and my palm length. Maybe this was to give him an idea or back up what he had already judged. He looked first and said you need extra layer tape. Then when he measured he said yes, one layer should be perfect... and it was.

I'm not surprised you are struggling.....even if Jumbo is correct, it'll take some getting used to.
My Ping G5 has a thinner than standard grip and it works really well for me. I have smallish hands.
If you can't get it square, why not loosen the grip off, and turn the club a few degrees closed, then re-grip. i.e. a stronger grip.

I guess its just like buying shoes. If you went into clarks and asked for a pair they would want to know what size you were to start with. Then, if they were to tight, slim, wide, they would find some to suit.
