I played this format yesterday. First time I'd ever played it. I really really enjoyed it, what a great format! Both of you drive off and you chose the best drive, and then take alternate shots with that ball.

I've played foursomes twice before and thought that was a great format, but this one I REALLY like. Shame there arent more comps of this variety, I would love to play more.

Spoke to our Pro after the round and he said the reason we only have one a year is because those who only play once a week want to play 18 holes, not share them with someone else, so the comps arent as supported as the others for that reason. Such a shame I think, I could easily play more of these.

I've also next played Texas Scramble and I'd love to give that a go too, that sounds like fun. Good for a society day maybe? We dont have one of these at our place tho, apart from the WAGS, they have one a year. Guess I'll have to wait till im older to play that one then..

Do most clubs have these formats? If so, what do you think about them? Do you enjoy playing them?

Greensomes is fun - less serious than Foursomes, which is the quickest, but least sociable format (imo) when played properly.

Texas Scramble should be quick but rarely is. It's typically played on Captain's, and other Charity, Days.

Why do you say foursomes is the least sociable format? Surely it encourages you to be MORE sociable because you play in a team, not on your own. Thats what I found anyway.

When played properly you walk ahead as your partner is teeing off and then he continues on up past you as you are hitting. When you see 2 good 4some players play really well they see little of each other apart from on the greens. This is also what makes it the fastest variant of the game (this seemed to be missed at our place in the dail mail qualifier where we were somehow nearly 4 hrs still)

Yep, that's why!

And (again, played properly) there can be times when you don't even see each other on the Greens!

I believe it's only the 'traditional' clubs that play it 'properly' - certainly South of Hadrian's Wall.

I played my first greensomes comp yesterday. Was a lot of fun even if my partner and myself didn't play too well.
What sort of scoring normally goes on in this format? The winning score at our club yesterday was ridiculous.
The comp was played off 3/8 combined handicap. The winners play off 3 and 6 so their handicap for the comp was 3. They scored 47 points. A gross 8 under 64. Apparently they had 10 birdies and an eagle.
Is this kind of scoring normal? I thought 40 points would be a decent score.

highly unusual, even unusual if it was a 4BBB

That was my thought. A lot of us said that would have been impressive enough in 4BBB. I guess they just had one of those days where they did everything right

Most of our mixed competitions are Greensomes and I've learnt to really enjoy it. Certainly suits HID's and my games as I hit the ball a decent lick so off the reds am usually in a strong position of the tee for him to nail the approach shot

Foursomes is tougher but played two 36 hole comps this year so grew to enjoy that too.
