My word, are these competitions played at other courses?
I played Hunstanton last week, and after 3-4 holes, I thought, these tee positions are tough. After 6 holes I thought these are the toughest pins I've ever played to. None of them were more than two driver shaft lengths on the green.
If they were at the back of the green, there was a ditch yards behind, if at the front, they were just over a bunker and most were at the side of greens, some only 2-3 feet on. i thought that there were guidelines as to a minimum of how much they should be on a green, and would guees that it should be 6 foot minimum, whereas these were that at the maximum.
There was one par 5 where the pin was maybe eight foot on from the side, but there was a large dip just before the pin, where anything underhit straight at the flag, left your ball 15 foot off the green - a real tempter.
I was just playing on my own, but there were lots of 2 balls out, and they were in the comp. By the time I got to the 17th I thought something was amiss when on a hole were a sharp bank on the left with a six foot drop next to it, the pin was only 2 foot on from that side. 18 nearly the same.
I was honestly flabbergasted, and could only describe them as "dirty". I had to ask a member in the car park, and was advised that it was a once a year comp that is called "greenkeeper's revenge". I had a six over handicap round (12 over gross) with 4 x 3 putts and a 4 putt, and was made up how well I played.
I'd never heard of this before, and I must admit it was lots of fun. Anyone else have these at their clubs?
I looked at HowdidIdo today to see what the CSS was, but no results posted, which is a shame, as I think it would have been off the dial.
