Greenkeeper

During the competition season, April-Oct they will be out to cut greens and place the pins on a Saturday morning, if there are comps on. If not, then ......

They pop in Saturday and Sunday morning yo check things over

Would you expect them to be paid overtime for the weekend? After all its the members' money that pays those wages.

Or would you think a five day week on a rota covering all 7 days?

Tough question , Would depend on how many ya have, if ya have enough then rota ,

if not & ya wanted the greens cut at weekend then its OT ,

we have same comp most sat & sun so just green cutting required & no hole changes, TBH ive no idea how they are paid at our place

Our don't as a rule. at the moment one of the guys that lives in one of our cottages goes out and moves the flags onto winter greens if its frosty at the weekend.

During the season we have to young lads who rake the bunkers on a sat morning , but no greens keepers as such

However, if their initial contract said 'normal working hours' are Wed-Sun and off Mon-Tues there should be no issues, and no overtime payments.

It's not difficult to have skeleton cover Mon-Tues or if the club can afford it have 2 greens staff's normal week Mon-Fri as well as the other 2 who are Wed-Sun.

At most (if not all) clubs the weekend is peak time - it is beyond my understanding why the course isn't prepared properly on both of those days.

Greens cut and bunkers raked as a minimum plus the holes changed if there is a Competition on.

There was a downpour yesterday between 6am & 7am. A number of temps put on - fair enough.

We are built on chalk and yesterday was dry and warm from then on. By 9am the majority of the greens were bone dry. By 10:30 they were all back to great shape.

So, get the greens back on???? Nope, the greenkeeper had gone home @ 8:05 as soon as the pro shop were in.

Trust a good greenkeeper and let them get on - 100% agree.

Blindly trust an apathetic, lazy one?

Grrrrrrrrrr. Hurry up The Masters, official season kick off!!!

Seems that is a common problem at a lot of courses. Think with the new policy of always staying on the main greens it will overcome those sort of issues

Maybe worth suggesting to them to have a second hole on each green in an area that is the driest have the pins moved there during wet periods so at least you are on the greens ?

Always going to be hard to justify a greenkeeper all day at weekends when they can't work on the course much

Yep, its beyond my comprehension most of the time!!!

we had something similar yesterday, light frost first thing, greenkeeper that live on the course, goes out in a buggy and putt all the flags on the winter greens, half an hour later sun is out and the 18th green clear and the whole course not much later. Stayed in temp the rest of the day despite the temp being 8 deg by lunch time and the course packed.

Still on temps today and there wasn't even any frost!!!!:(

Does depend on the type of course/club you are at..i.e. Private, Muni,Managed or Proprietary etc.....At mine we have about 3, they are usually found blowing leaves around the day before 60mph winds, or leaning on rakes....:)
..Rare species, not usually seen at weekends on the course, but can be spotted down town on the sauce...;)

worth them knowing that Gleneagles has no temps, it's full greens or the course is closed with bad weather, and each year they have beautiful greens capable of hosting European tour events and below.

Sub air system helps :D

They will only work on weekends if there is an official club competition. Even then its usually just swishing the dew off the greens.

Blimey Homer that is even worse than my place.

Are weekend players not entitled to have the course prepared for them too?? Or are the greenkeepers working for the seniors who play most days!?
