Played 18 yesterday afternoon with a couple of mates and by chance the pro asked if he could join in. All went well until we got to the par 3 fifth hole 180 yds sloping downhill to a large green which slopes downhill to a bottom third which is quite level. For the first time in living memory the hole had been cut on the upper part.We rapidly discovered that even putting from below the hole the ball would roll to a halt and then gravity took over and it would roll all the way down to the flat section of the green 10 yards away.Needless to say after a few goes we moved on to the 6th. The pro got on his mobile to the office and explained the problem asking for the hole to be moved asap. He was told that the greenkeeper had put the hole there so that the flat section could have a rest! Priceless!

my first though would be to hit the ball harder, second thought would you post to say the green is thread bare and they should move the pin.

Surely a poorly designed green if there are only limited pin placements. I think it's good green keeping to give areas, not just around the hole a rest. If he has only a small number of options other than crazy golf placements surely the club need to look at the hole and redo the green

Perhaps my description of the situation wasn't sufficiently clear. The hole was cut on a part of the green where the slope was sufficiently steep that a ball no matter how carefully placed would simply roll away to a distance of 10 yards. So if you didn't sink this 10 yarder, the ball just kept coming back.Maybe I have had a sheltered golfing existence but I have never before seen anything like it.

We have a similar position on our 16th I chipped the ball with a 58* to 8inchs dead yet the ball finished off the green 10/12 yards away.

Apparently when the green keeper checked it at 6am, with moisture on the green the ball would hold. Come 10am once it dried most people atleast 3 putted with an average putts on that green being 4.something

Im a greenekeper and yeah when picking pin positions sometime is difficult looking around the green where previous ones been picked and at times when I know there isn't any comps I put them in a daft places to save the worn part on a green

I'm with Homer on this one.

Lack of pin positions on a green is down to poor design , At my old club Knighton Heath i once complained about a pin cut about 5 foot from the front of the 5th green in the middle , anything above was putted off the green if it did not go in as was any side putt that did not go in , it was just pure stupid pin position . The other time was at Quinta South course , We had started on the 10th and got round to the 1st and i was on in 2 and the pin was cut on the slope back left , that green is like a bowl on the back part and try as i did every putt came back to me , was not impress with that i saw the director of golf after and when down on the buggy and ask him to show me how to play that , give his due he agreed and i got a 25 euro voucher to spent in the shop , spoil my day it did as i had a good round to that point ............................EYG
