Read another post, where there was a comment about the speed of the greens being fast, when a bit over 10 on the stimp metre.

To me, 10 is about the bench mark for greens in the summer. Much slower than this, and it is like putting on shag pile. Much quicker, and it gets a bit interesting (although I would rather they were faster than slower).

Ours were 9.8 at the weekend, which were fine. This is not usual for my club though. Normally they are a bit slower than this.

I know that true greens are more important than out and out speed, but I do like to roll my putts, not whack them.

What is the perfect greens speed?

9.8 is fast.

Anywhere between 8.5 and 12 for me. Played the Belfry 10 days ago. They were about 10 I think and absolutely perfect.

Augusta is normally about 12-12.5 I think.

Excuse my ignorance but how do you know the stimp reading of a green?

Does the club post this on the notice-board in the locker room?

I also, from the content of the above posts, assume that the higher the reading the faster the greens, is this correct?

Do all the greens on other courses tend to have the same stimp reading as our greens do vary. The more exposed/higher greens can be faster as they are more wind swept and dry out quicker.

Our general manager had gone out and measured them, and told me when I had a chat later.

Normally our practice green is the fastest green, by miles, and the other 18 are fairly consistent.

The measurement is the roll out of a ball when released down a set ramp. So yes, the bigger the number, the further it rolled, the faster the greens.

Any speed is ok with me as long as the green are true. I can adjust to the pace of slow or quick greens if the ball goes where you putt it.

Ours currently at 10.8 - links course, loads of wind, no rain = fast fast fast.

Have you also being speaking to your course manager or do you have a gadget to measure this so accurately?

I would guess where I normally play they are about 9. I remember them being measured at 8.5 in February and they are a little quicker now.

I don't mind how fast or slow they are but it was nice yesterday being confident that the ball would run true and not bobble all over the place. I just struggled because it's not what Im used to.

Not ours. :)

I wouldn't know about stimp meter readings, maybe our comittee should test them and see if "our" opinion on them being slow is a reality.

Not sure what the stump reading of our greens are,but they are well known locally for always being fast and true. Our geez however.................

think ours to be up at 12 this week, Euro pro event there, so closed til saturday, hoping that they are still quick as hell as I love the quick greens, you can just pick your line and watch it go... :)

Head greenkeeper has a new set of toys (super fast roller and stimp meter), and I was with him after he finished rolling a green, and then tested the speed. Fasted I've played on since bone dry June last year. No doubt it'll pish it down in July as always...

Brickendon was quick yesterday. no idea what a stimp meter would have recorded (all courses should have one) but the greens were true. tricky, lots of borrows, and absolutely nothing stopped but no peculiar kicks.

Fast, slow, treacle don't care as long as they are consistant. The one thing I hate is playing the night before a competition getting used to the green speed and they get shaved the following morning. This happened to me last week played the medal Saturday putted very well, went out and played the optional medal on the Sunday and hit the first putt what I thought was close only to see it passing the hole and leaving the green. It took about 3 or 4 holes to get used to the new green speed then I putted well.

In my view if greens were more standard speed at your club people would putt so much better as they woul be able to judge pace better.

But greens will always be slower later in the day.

My pet hate is what happens at my club. The practice green is way quicker than the course, so practicing before you play is a waste of time.
