Morning recieved a tweet this morning saying that the European Court of Justice rules that green fees charged by private golf clubs SHOULD be exempt from VAT?

Not sure if this will happen nor sure what effect it will have on the average golfer ?

anybody know anymore on this case?

IO thought all this VAT and Sports Clubs thing got sorted out about 20yrs ago. I recall that my club received a big tax rebate due to the misinterpretation, incorrect application (or whatever) of VAT legislation. We could all have something like £70 back or it could all go to course improvements. There was a vote - it went on improvements.

Thats exactly how I remember it - and the vote we had went the same way.

I think that was due to golf clubs being private member clubs however. This may be slightly different and refers to those pitching up on the day and paying a green fee.

I am sure some legal accountancy chap will be along soon!

Looks great if you are a member of a private members club as a rebate will be coming the clubs way. Not so great though for those of us that are members of propriety clubs.

Bit drastic to suggest some propriety clubs will go under as they will be unable to compete with members clubs on a green fee basis - for sake of maybe a tenner a round max.

And I hold my breath about any monies coming the way of my club. I'll say hurrah when I get a message from my club telling me new money is in the bank.

Some golf clubs are already under serious financial pressure and therefore for them this is the last thing they need. Though don't see many clubs falling purely because of this change.

Not sure why you are so sceptical the article seems to say that this is the end of the line in terms of any further court challenges.
