it's hardly like being 3 down at ht in a cup final though is it...

cracking tale, and a good read  a 189yd 6i in 1974? so much for technological advances in the game!

Excellent story, reminds me of the hole at seahouses, the cove I think it is called. In essence it is a tee shot over the sea/cove. You could do it with a PW. Or a sand wedge, but in the clubhouse they have a story framed on the wall. A golf mag rated it one of the 18 hardest holes in golf. I was astounded and asked why coz it is not even the hardest hole on the course.
on the day the guy from the mag came he played the course and could not hit the green because of the wind, the locals said the wind only blows that way half a dozen times a year and he tried every club in the bag but said it was an impossible hole to play. The locals said the day after you could probably of hit the green with a putter. Ironically son in laws son. Put his ball 18" from the pin on his tee shot.
I say all that coz to get them holes in one on the same hole with a two iron and a six iron is some going.

Many thanks, OP. Although I've been aware of that tale for a while (a Hunny regular, here) I've never heard the full story, yet alone from one of the team - tremendous stuff.

I heard this story years ago and on my first trip to Hunstanton I looked them up in the 'hole in book' on the mantlepiece in the lounge. I believe they have since filled that book and replaced it with a new one.
