In the last week I've played two courses that have had grass seed on the greens. Is this the norm at this time of year? Admittedly they were pretty rubbish greens. The first place they looked like your back lawn but mowed really close.

Depends on the course, grasses on the greens currently, if they are trying to aggressively change the sward etc
Not atypical, but most of the time its done in September

Late summer/autumn maintenance is common place, all depends what the greenkeepers are trying to achieve on any particular course. My club is heavily overseeding just now to change the type of grass and it needs to be done while there is plenty of growing season left so it can establish.

best time to do it if its going to be done.

Ive done all the patches the dogs have pee'd on this week, seed already coming through.

No need for it but I'd bet that the 'keepers of the green' would come out with some sorry @ssed excuse.

Seems like a classic reply from a 'typical' golfer (not specifically H_H). Expectation that the course will always be in perfect condition, but not prepared to tolerate any 'hindrance' by GKs to maintain the course to provide the best possible conditions now and in the future!

Overseeding is normal practice for greens. Dry weather is a good time for sowing as the seed can get down to the soil without getting stuck on wet grass. Regular watering before mowing gets the seed right down and triggers germination.

Normally done to keep down poa annua and replace with bents and fescues.

Last two weeks in August is the best time to sow seed or lay turf.
Any well organised club [like the OP's;)] will be doing it now.

HH perhaps you should investigate a tad before posting such rubbish. Not good for your 'image'.

The general rule of thumb for overseeding is that it is best carried out in late summer-early autumn when the soil temperature is still high and rainfall adequate for the germination and establishment of new seedlings without experiencing too much environmental stress. Autumn is also a time when the maintenance program begins to tone down, to give the new seedlings a greater chance of surviving.

When would you like the greenstaff to do their major green work ?

This week and for the next 3 weeks is prime time for the major extensive green maintenance - some clubs started last week , ours start next week

The same faces moan each year about the work being done - they expect it to happen at night and be done by they crawl round the course in the morning

Your course is in decent nick? Well, it ain't done by magic or the fairies.

When's the best time to do it? Now, and we start on Monday. Club championship was last week, summer matchplay finals are in 6 weeks time. Course was/will be perfect for both. As chairman of greens, if anyone cares to complain to me, then they may. But i fear they'll get a short answer...

Our club champs this coming weekend, greens in great condition but work on them will start immediately next week.
