so I hit the ball well off mats but I need to start hitting off turf as I know mats can mask a bad shot. After my swing meltdown in Ireland I am now hitting the ball extremely well and tempo/rhythm is really good (all down to some hard work and going back to basics)

Are there any in Herts apart from at golf clubs? I would love to just rock up and actually see where my divots are going rather than guess by ball flight/feel

Theres one at Brocket Hall, another at Centurion lol Steve, both a little on the pricey side to access though!

Is one at our place (I know its not Herts but maybe not too far?)

Not sure you'll find grass to hit off at any independent ranges

Cheers Dave, think my mate joined there as had a deal on.

Centurion looks good but no prices on website Steve ;)
(I don't think my old golf diesel would look good in their car park either haha)

If you are looking for divot feedback rather than actual ball flight, get some practice balls and get out in that garden of yours
you could then sell the redundant lawnmower on ebay :)

Full of good ideas

Having a grass practice area is a big plus for me at my club. There's a world of difference between mats and turf. We don't have any ranges or other clubs locally with grass facilities for non-members so if Gibbo finds somewhere he's luckier than the ones around here

cheers Paddy, just realised gravely has an area to the right of the range with a bunker aswell. I would use a field but all the ones around here have great big 'no golf' signs and last time I got grief off dog walkers! A shame as its 100m from my house grrrr.

There's one at Mill Green Steve....I always used to use it.....just buy some tokens from the pro shop.......was never asked if I was a member.

The Grove has a grass range, but it would be cheaper to buy a box of new balls than what they charge for range balls...

Last time I tried to use the range at the Grove they advised I could only purchase a token if I was a resident at the hotel or booked in to play a round. That was about 3 years ago, so not sure if it's changed.

they charge for a few quid for non members now and you cant use much more than an 8 iron on it.

Yep. And the course rangers there are surprisingly diligent at checking your credentials...

Had forgotten about mill green. No need to worry about looking like a member/green fee payer, it's just a glorified payandplay so they're happy to take your money.

Very slightly off topic, but the range balls at mill green are even worse than whitehills iirc. Gosling on the other hand has an entire hopper full of lovely nearly new srixon range balls. No grass, but you're not having to filter out 75% for pitching practice. Only £4 for 100 between 12 and 3.....

Last time I used gosling it was still the solid 1 piece yellow jobbies

And persimmon ??

They certainly were rubbish in the past, but for the last 12 months or so have been all replaced with the new ones.

Main problem now is that the happy hours coincide with the sun beating down on all the bays, but that's what I think is technically known as a 'first world problem'...
