Hi everyone,
I know its been done and done again but i am thinking of buying a gps unit and am unsure which to go for, ive gone back over past posts and had a look but cant really find anything and thought it would be better just to start a new post. I am being drawn to the Sonocaddie Autoplay which you seem to pay for everything upfront and any further downloads are free although my pal has a skycaddie and that also seems very good. What do you guys use and has it improved your games any? (which areas) anyhelp would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Andy :)

Are these things legal to use in competitions?

The R&A rules now make it possible for them to be used - but your club has to make a local rule to allow them. Some clubs have - others like mine (the old frats) don't or wont. (It's in the notes to rule 14/3).

As to OP - I really like my skycaddie (for casual use). Some folk don't like the fact you pay an annual subscription - but I think the accuracy of it is really good. Have a browse through previous threads - there's plenty of them

I have the Sonocaddie v300,which is excellent,I did have a problem when I first got it,however, a quick e-mail and every thing was sorted...first class service and excellent GPS and the maps are fantastic!

Isn't the magazine doing a review of GPS in the next issue?
They're pitting them all against one another (Including the free ones you can get for your smart phone)
I personally use free caddie and would never use a subscription based model as I'd view it as a rip off (Kinda like Galvin Green waterproofs)
Like The waterproofs they might be slightly better but not enough better to justify the cost

Had my SC5 for 18 months now and its done me proud. I agree the annual fee is a con but as a unit its functionality is great. If I was in the market again though I would look at sonocaddie but it seemed a large unit and wouldn't fit into my pocket like an SC

I think they are good, particularly if you play a lot of different courses. For familiar courses, I prefer a laser rangefinder.

NO good on blind shots, I've used both and the GPS is quicker and easier.

I think I can justify £30 a year to skycaddie over £250 for a rain jacket.
Yes the subs thing is an issue but its only 57 pence a week! When you're paying £500+ subs, another few hundred on equipment and other green fees its not even worth thinking about.

I use the Sonnocaddie V300 and can highly recommend it.
It does all the stuff sky caddie does, PLUS
free membership
free course downloads
AND
an overall view of each hole or a close up green view

I got an iphone a couple of weeks ago and there seems to be quite a few apps to choose from o this but I'm not sure which to go for. So i am waiting for the review in the mag. Any first hand recommendations would be great too

I considered the Iphone as my wife has one and they are amazing but when i had a look at some of the reviews it was saying that a lot of the Golf GPS Apps took quite a while to upload the info needed so rather than speeding play up you were often slowing it down. Another thing that made me think twice was the fact that when/if i do get my Iphone it would be on a 2 year contract and would have to last and thought it would probably end up getting bashed about and soaking wet.
