at the moment I use swingxswing as my GPS but have been thinking of getting a stand alone GPS mainly to stop my phone battery being drained.I am not overly keen on the watches as I prefer a hand held version.what do you guys use?

I did use a couple of different apps, but like you say it drained my battery and I didn't like having to pull out my phone on the course. I now have a laser and love it

I had a garmin G3 GPS device before I switched to a laser and I would recommend one of them if you are just looking for a basic model. Gives you front, middle and back and distances to hazards. Good screen, easy to read and use.

I've used golfshot gps on the old iPhone since Feb 2010 worldwide paid a one off 17 quid and for me it does the job perfectly. Not only a GPS but also put all my scores in and stats like fairways hit etc. Literally takes seconds after each hole. Now use it on the iPhone 6 which uses about 10 to 15 % of battery life for 18 holes.

I've got a Skycaddie and a Bushnell Tour X, both great. If you are going for a GPS I would recommend the Skycaddie Touch has an overview of each hole bit like having a strokesaver for each course. Great for playing new courses and they are pretty quick too.

I now have a rangefinder but I was using this before I got it and I thought it was great. Very useful having a map of the hole on it. If you're willing to spend the money on a separate GPS consider instead buying a battery pack booster thing for your iPhone.

Skycaddie Sgxw refurbished only £109. Well it was last week when I got one, electragolf I think it was

Alternatively put the money you would spend on a GPS towards a leccy trolley with a USB charging port for your phone. I have motocaddy M3 pro and use with my iPhone and golfshot app. Works well and is as accurate as one of my playing buddies who uses a GPS on a belt clip.

I use an app called hole 19. Does the job perfect for me. I have a Samsung gear watch and it pairs with it and gives me front middle and back of the greens along with scorecard input, fairways hit, number of putts ect.

If battery is your primary reason then get a power bank. They are cheap and work well. A 10000mah shouldn't be more than £15 and would pretty much guarantee walking off the course with a full charge on your phone after 18 holes.

I can vouch for SkyCaddie. Only used one for a couple of rounds, but all on 'away' courses and it has been superb and informing be the best way to play holes.
Same as macca above. ElectraGolf for £109 + delivery 👍🏻

I was a fan of using phone apps due to low/no cost but since I have bought a GPS watch I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.
Maybe it was the way I was using the apps but I would always have to get the phone out of my bag/trolley, unlock the phone, wait for the GPS to update and it always took longer than it should.
With the watch now the GPS is always on and tracking and I find I use it much more and trust its numbers.

I keep the iPhone 6 in my back pocket. Whip it out when I am about 10 yards from my ball, whack my thumb on the screen and by the time I'm at my ball golfshot has settled on the number. Not as simple as glancing at a watch but works for me and I can add all my stats
