Does anyone know while using something like sonokaddy or the likes on a mobile phone while on the course, does it use your internet allowance. In other words are you being charged? I was told be a guy that its only connected to a satalite and not the internet.
Any info would be great.

he's half right...a phone uses a-gps rather than true gps.
Sonocaddie etc, use only satellites, a phone uses a combination of satellites and mobile phone towers to gain your location.
It makes a request to the cell phone towers to get your basic location then locks onto specific satellites in that area (saves it from looking for all available satellites).
What this means is that you need at least 1 bar of signal on your phone to get a gps signal.

When using mine (HTC Desire) I turn OFF mobile networks and Wi-fi and just leave GPS on. It still works perfectly and conserves bat life for 36 holes easy. :)

Mobile phone battery life is murdered by gps. As long as you have the course pre downloaded (even do it by your household broadband and wireless if you have it) it shouldnt cost a penny.

Really? I'd love to know how, my HTC Desire will last 18 holes without any trouble but it certainly wouldn't get through another round, if it's half charged it struggles to get through 9 holes...

Think it depends on the software you use.

I use Skydroid, and used it for 36 at Cooden Beach last year and I still had life in the battery.

if you use a battery trolley without usb, just wire a car 12v socket[fused] and plug in a car carger. should cost about £5-7 with ebay bits, maybe even less. fully charged phone afterwards, if you are carrying, just switch phone on when needed.
shagster :D

I have HTC HD2 but use Nokia LD 3W Bluetooth GPS which sits in bag and lasts for ages. Phone is, therefore, only on bluetooth - 36 holes easy
