Hi guys.

Am after some advice regarding a GPS device. I have had a brief look and have decided that a watch and laser pointer thing isn't for me.

Dont really have a price range but am looking for something that is reliable and will give me distances to everything on the hole (hazards etc) I don't know if that is standard or not?

Any help, advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Best and most accurate mapping I've seen is Skycaddie. Something that offers a course view like the Touch or the SGx would be my first choice if I went back to a dedicated GPS and could justify the subscription.

If going sub free I've heard good things about the Garmin units but haven't had hands on experience with them.

I've used mobitee on iPhone for casual rounds for a year - very good at tracking and uses google maps images it downloads, so need to be sure you've 3G to get they if you roll up at new course... but to be honest even with cradle on trolley it was faff to work with and even taking lock screen off and it kills iPhone battery in a round so you need to turn up fully charged and have car charger ready for journey home.

switched 3 rounds ago to a garmin s4 which is more practical for yaradges but lacks the course mapping etc and I wish I'd done a bit more research but the score recording and other features are absolutely sh!te.... to access the scorecard you have to browse the device using IE or firefox they don't support safari or chrome (FFS!) ...which when all you get is a table of hole and score plus some stats like GIR, putts etc is absolutely woeful ....GARMIN it is dire....

North Mimms has a Skycaddie 2.5 going by the looks of another thread.
It'll do everything you need, just need to cough up for a contract with Skycaddie - £30.?

I've got a Snooper, just the basic model that was about £160 three years ago. Gives all the info I need. Front/Middle/Back, yards to bunkers and water hazards, front/back of ponds. Battery life reasonable, still get 2 rounds easily. Can be upgraded to a car sat nav for extra if that interests you. Comes with all the courses pre-loaded (4500+ and covers Portugal Spain etc) and no extra subscription or downloads to worry about. A mate bought the £250 touchscreen with hole maps etc and found it was overkill and wishes he'd bought the model I got. You need to work out exactly what you want from a device and get the one that fits the bill. I did and have been really happy with it.

Sounds like the same Snooper S320 as I have had for 3 years or so. Has everything I need and no subscription (even has all the courses in Turkey where we go every year). You can get them for £129 or less.

I have the Sky caddie. Had the 5 and then changed to the SGX. I did try the Garmin for a while but I preferred the bigger screen on the SC. I don't like the £30 sub per annum BUT the SGX were offering the first year free.
