Gotta love those driveable par 4s

Out today, stunk up most of the course something rotten but found salvation in our short par 4s. The 255 yd 11th I hit the greenside bunker, wedged out for a GIR then 2 putts for a par. 285 yd 14th, hitting downwind I was just off the green and could putt the ball up, then sank the next putt for a nice birdie. 249 yd 16th, little slice out but decent position to pitch the ball onto the green and then sank that putt for another very welcome birdie. (As an aside, my playing partner both times chose to ask 'is this for birdie?', as if to add that little bit of extra pressure to the putt)

Does everyone else make sure to take advantage of the short par 4s at their track? I struggled the rest of the day but my head was just right stood on the tee for those three shots. I was just confident that I would make a good clean contact. Makes me wonder how many of the other demons in my game are just lack of confidence and all I need is to have a couple of good shots from each situation to get my belief up.

We only have 3 Par 4's shorter than 400 yards.
The 1st - 385 (mentioned in a thread a while ago - most happy with a bogey)
The 6th - 318 (slight D/L around some trees
The 14th - 341 - straight.

The latter 2, as long as you get a reasonable drive away are highly birdyable - assuming your approach is good. Still should be a straight-forward par.

I know some courses where a 250 yard hole is a par 3.........

250yd is a full blown drive for most or an easy 7 iron for forum members.

Anyhow, back to the OP, I think we need the 'easier' holes on our home tracks to get a little bit of confidence back and potentially some much needed stableford points :)

We only have one at 320 yards that is vaguely reachable. Downwind in summer I might be tempted but with a bunker running across the fairway at about 270 its touch and go for me. Other than that we don't have such a thing

Played Cruden bay last month and noticed a bottle of whisky on the bar with some glasses.

There was a note about a scratch golfer with a hole-in-one on the short par4 off the medal tee.

He spanked a 3wood 252 yards into the Hole

Old Niels at my old club, south winchester. Played with the guy a few times in some drawn comps (also the club champ atm). Saw him hit driver, driver onto a par 5 into the wind!

Myself, well I have now driven adjacent to and then birdied the 3rd at East Horton (parkland course) and then gone on to also drive adjacent to or on the 16th in two rounds in sucession (one last summer and one today) Both times I walked off the 16th with a 5! It is a real micky mouse green on a steep slope, why they did not build it into two tiers I will never know!

To reach the 16th today I had to fade a driver round a tree next to the tee, I opened up the face at address and spanked it out the middle!

I once played at the Teign Vally golf club in Devon. There is notice on the 496-yard par 5 17th, saying that a Mr Shaun Lynch in 1995 hit a 3 iron hole in one.

Wonder if he was related to Steve?

Does the op play on a par 3 course!? haha.

Only par 4 that is maybe remotley drivable is the 3rd that is 294yards off the yellows but it's uphill, green is set to the right and it's OOB all down the right and normally plays into the wind.

It's nice to play them once in a while, but overall I'm not keen on driveable par 4's unless there is a good amount of risk in going for them.

Our shortest is about 310yds. I can sometimes get there in the summer but no chance with soft fairways. The closest I've been this winter was about 5yds short but that was wind behind and off the yellows (about 10yds shorter).

Chance would be a fine thing to have anything that short. Shortest for us on the yellows is 305. But that means carrying the ball over 70 foot trees that sit at about 260 yards. Another one at 335 is drivable due to the contours of the fairway and you normally get a bit of breeze behind, but it is a bit of a risk as you have to thread it through a 30 yard wide gap at around the 270 mark. Miss right or left and you are under trees with a huge bunker protecting the front of the green.

Played with a Pro mate the other day - doesn't have a 3-wood. Played Driver Driver onto green of 1st (515) and same just short on 18th (540 and had to hit slight cut). Was 5yds short of 345 par 4 which, for some reason they've taken bunkers that would have caught him. Seriously long!

We have a drivable hole at 323 yards and a gentle down hill, but, from the back tees you're driving through a funnel of trees for the first 150 yards and hardly any space left down to the hole, there is a bale out (of sorts) on the right.I tend to have a go, and get on about 6 or so times a year from the yellows but in comps I either hit a 5 iron for safety or an easy driver with slice.

Despite being able to drive it a few times a year I have only Eagled it once!

I love that hole. I think all courses should have one par 4 where you think, Yep, I'll be taking that on! I bet that loads of people will struggle to get a par on the 8th at Cruden. The rough is shaggier than Fellainis hair if you miss the fairway and the green is an upturned saucer that is pretty damn quick. Old Tom Morris thought it was a perfect short par 4.

We have a couple of par 4s under 300 yards.

They have narrow entrances to the green and need accurate drives. They can be very tricky to par if you are off line so are nice risk and reward holes. Good fun in 4BBB matches, when we all mostly go for the green. In a medal a lot of players will go for them but I usually go with a hybrid or fairway metal to leave a short pitch or chip. Should give me a good birdie chance and nailed on par. Taking driver can easily result in a 6.

Just the one @ 305yds. I'll only go do it if a breeze behind, deep bunker 40yds short and OOB tight right put me off.
