Played my first round with my new shortened driver today, far more controlled, even hit it left a couple of times, never knew my course had a left side.

Was +1 at the turn and in the middle of the fairway on 10,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, then,,,,,,,,, 6 bogeys in a row, including 3 x3putts.followed by par, par bogey left me hoping i`ve made the buffer.

Might shorten my wedges and putter for next week. Never seen that coming :)

nice one. you'll get some post's soon saying it changes the swing weight and stuff but my pal took 2 inches of his with a hack saw and he hits it long and straight and said the control he has is immense. it has cost him about 10/15 yards though

Aye fingers crossed it works out. Felt more confidence off the tee today, im sure i'll have a better idea of the pros cons in a few weeks.

How much did you take off it and how did you decide how much to take off?

An inch off the butt end. I based it on my 3w. I hit that really well, it obviously has a smaller head but I can find the sweetspot far more often than my driver.

Spoke to the club pro, he said its well worth doing. It only cost £4 to do, so its not as if it was making him a fortune.

Its amazing how much difference an inch can make :D

I reckon having the driver under control is the biggest confidence booster imo. If You put the ball in good spots off the tee its rarely a bad round.

Interesting thread Keeno as I toyed with the idea of getting my driver shortened too only to be put off when i asked a pro and he started going on about swing weight and having to put lead powder in my driver head . Im going to keep an eye on your thread and see what others have to say on the topic

It is the RIP speed you had shortened?
Just looked at the specs, Benross had the lengths down at 44.75, but I see the RIP is at 45.25. Still shorter than many out there though!

I picked up a cheap VT Extreme at 12 degrees a bit ago and keep toying with making it a "2 wood", then maybe including a long, light shafted hitter for the open holes.

I've played 2 full rounds now and a foursomes tie with it. I certainly am straighter with it, still can be wayward at times, but more often than not have it under control. Distance wise, I feel I have lost a little bit, although I could be imagining it.

Hopefully get another couple of games played over the weekend and get a proper feel for it.

Great idea! I'll have the inch added back on and do just that or maybe I'll continue to play my new tiny driver and if I really need to I'll grip down a further inch on that :)

I don't understand why so many people recommend custom fitting, but shortening a driver seems like a daft idea??
