Im wondering is it possible to be a good iron player as well as a good driver of the ball....
Iv always hit my irons well... So much so that i think i could manage a nice set of butter knives as iv never had an issue with getting the ball in the air.....

But my driving on the other hand... Well...... Id probably hit the ball better with a sweeping brush....
Its probably due in part that i dont like hitting the range and just belting drive after drive into an open field like all the rest i see....

I much prefer working with my irons.... Maybe iv focused too much on them but iv read somewhere that the driver swing and irons swings are very different......

The funny thing is i seem to hit the driver well when im playing a tree lined course with narrow fairways... Our own course is a little bit wide open but with a lot of trouble left and right.....

I hit my irons well, same for my driver but cant hit fairway woods off the deck for toffee. I carry a 3 wood but I've only used it twice in the last 5-6 rounds. Even then I hit it right 70yrds and onto the next hole tee box.

I would say that the driver swing it a very different beast to an iron swing.

Im confident with both, but hitting them both well on the same day is different matter :D. I tend to be steady with both but ive had to practice hitting the driver more to get that confidence. I think the problem lies in that if you hit irons well and try to hit your driver like an iron its not going to work. 2 different swings completely.

In my head, atlast, my swing feels totally different between both. I can play both quite well, generally im quite confident with my irons, however seems that when im driving well my irons suffer and vice versa lol.

Slightly different set up but essentially the same swing.....
Thats where im going wrong then :D. My set up is far more upright with my driver and weight distribution different, thus a flatter swing plane, which makes it feel as though im putting a totally different swing on it . Thats why i never offer advice to playing partners

Just the one for me, very good iron player, awful driver of the ball. Part of the issue comes from old knee injury, a slight weight slide forward to protect the knee is fine with an iron but leads to me smothering and/or trying to flip the driver :(

Too modest... you're a decent ball striker with all clubs. The reason you don't hit the driver so good (as you might like to - which would be tour standard) is 'cos you hardly ever need it!!!

Irons are good now but the driver lets me down more often than not and to make matters worse I now hit my other woods left as they have such a closed face.
I don't use my driver often when I don't need to but I do like to have a whack with it every now and again as it goes MILES!!

straight flight is with a leftwards base line and a downwards angle of attack

your angle of attack with an iron is worth about .5 degree to the right for every degree down

so if your 3 degrees left with your path then you need to be 6 degrees down with your angle of attack and you'll get straight flight.

I think it's because playing a tight course, you pick a specific target to aim at. Playing your own course it's just "down the middle" or "down the right side".

Pick specific - small - targets, like a single tree trunk in the distance.

I would say I am equally capable\incapable* with every club. I don't consider my driving to be particularly better or worse than my iron play or my fairway woods and it's unusual that I have rounds where I can hit one but not the other.

I think you have to be "average" at driving and iron play to be able to play at a reasonable standard and compete in the monthly comps. I have always found the better driving days lead to better scores as I am playing shorter. To be honest it isn't something I really worry about

That video makes sense to me... Buti can guarantee you one thing after watching that..l its going to ruin both my iron and driver swing for the next 3 months as a tinker with angles! Lol
