Not been very well of late (another hospital stay) so a bit of retail therapy needed...just got myself an Odyssey White Hot no4 XG used but mint £31.00 and a benross 52 degree innovator wedge £20.00 (got the 58deg and its a doddle to hit) so sat at home, hid at work what else to do but a range session.Well really pleased with how it went but just a few questions for the wise among us...
1. I seem to have developed a bit of a push/fade in all clubs...only used to be there on mid/long irons and woods...checked my alignment with a club on the floor but still going right.....any pointers would be great.
2.Is there an optimum club to use to 'groove' my swing ...just wondered because I have bought a 5 iron replacement 26 degree hybrid (Benross of course)and this feels so easy to swing and the results are far superior to my 5 iron so wondered at this stage would there be anything wrong with taking just this club to the range and hitting 100 balls with it?
3.Definately going to have lessons very soon so my question is (so not to get ripped off) what would be a general requirement for a novice like myself ? and also time between each lesson ie fortnightly, monthly etc (the lessons cost £18 per half hour which seems resonable to me ......as long as I dont need 100's)

I thank you

Hi Timevans

Sorry you have not been well.....seems like you have bought some bargains!

I am not a pro so would not wish to advise you on your push fade but as club to use for practice I would think 7 or 5 iron with these clubs the loft is not to steep to hide the spin you create on the ball where as the short irons generate more backspin and can hide some faults.

Time between lessons really depends on how much time you have to practice what has been taught!

For me I find at least a month is needed but maybe for a novice once a fortnight would give you more confidence.

Its not easy at first but do try to practice what you have been taught .......the swing will not change overnight but it will in time if you put the effort in!

As for price I pay 30 Euro for half an hour...I find an hour to much but we are all different.

Best of Luck

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. I had wondered where you had gone. Without seeing your swing it is diificult to say with any accuracy what is causing your problems. It sounds like you have got some good bargains (I presume HID knew you were shopping. If not hide the evidence).

I don't tend to use any one particular club to groove a swing. If I am working on a swing mechanic or thought from a lesson I normally hit a few wedges to warm up and get a decent smooth tempo and then use a 6, 7, or 8 depending on what I'm trying to do and how hard, difficult or big a change it is (obviously it is slightly easier hitting an 8 compared to a 6).

My advice would be to perhaps go to your pro before you have any lessons and have a chat with him. If he has seen you before he may have an idea of your main faults. If you haven't been before, have a look around as some pros/ranges offer an initial assessment lesson which is basically a look at your game (normally with video analysis) to see what your swing is like, a few quick pointers and an agreeing a development plan. My advice would be whatever way you decide to go, start with the basics (grip, alignment, posture etc - all very boring but a necessity to build a solid swing) and work on getting those right first.

I normally have a lesson every 6 weeks or so but you may want find it more beneficial to have one every month or even every 2-3 weeks. It is personal preference. The important thing is to practice what you have been taught each time and make it as natural and repeatable as possible. If you try and cram too much in too quickly it is easy to get lost and confused.
