Good Courses in SW London??

I am moving to Wimbledon in the next few weeks for a year and I am looking for courses to play while I’m down there.

The only criteria I have are

It’s a nice course (maybe not too challenging as I am a beginner)
Ability to pay-and-play (no guest of a member rubbish)
Less than £30 per round on a weekend

I am willing to drive 30mins - 45mins

Thanks

Get yourself a red jumper and head to Wimbledon Common. Decent track and friendly. Green fees available Monday-Friday. Alternatively try Horton Park near Epsom (bit open in places) as there will be green fees available for weekend play

Where in Wimbledon? I lived there for 10 years. There are two courses in Leatherhead which is only a 15-20 minute drive. Good driving range at New Malden too.

HTL use to be a member at Leatherhead. Bit pricey I think (£150 odd quid bar levy) and you have to book a tee time and can't always just roll up. If you're after membership WImbledon Common is a decent set up and relatively cheap and you can play without a tee time in the week but usually have to book a time Sunday mornings (and Saturdays if there is a comp on)

Wimbledon Common and London Scottish both share the same course and are nice clubs where you can pay and play but also get a decent membership rate. When I lived in Wimbledon years ago, local residents could also get on Royal Wimbledon on a Monday for about £30 - fantastic course but quite challenging. Other local options are Mitcham and Wimbledon Park. Like Homer says, New Maldon has an excellent driving range and shop. Within about 15-20 mins drive of Wimbledon you have loads of good courses around Kingston, Esher, Sutton, Epsom, Coulsdon and Banstead.

I don't know what it costs but Richmond Golf Club is a fantastic course. Mature, tight and the fastest greens I've ever played on.

Played there a few years ago and came off the course a nervous wreck from the greens, I was chatting in the Pro Shop and apparently the course was ready for the club championship and the greens had been measured at 12 on the stimpmeter.

Terrifyingly fast. Well worth a visit.

Two courses in Richmond Park worth a look (Prince and Dukes) which are pay and play and pretty decent. Good greens considering and usually very dry and firm

They are both pretty good but can be extremely busy and very very slow.

I remember playing there and having the SA cricket team right up our backsides for 18 holes. The group ahead would be putting out, we'd be waiting to play our approaches and the 4 ball of cricketers behind us would bomb their drives straight over our heads about 30 yards past us. Pretty naughty but some very impressive hitting, I would have said something but Brian McMillan was one big fella! :)

Not exactly SW, but Brent Valley is OK and used to be cheap-ish. I only ever played it midweek.
