I'm on holiday near Gt. Yarmouth for a week from tomorrow and was wondering if any of the Norfolk-based forummers (or north-east Suffolk) had any recommendations for decent courses in the area at reasonable prices/any to avoid

There will be 3 golfers amoung us, all semi-competent but I'll be the only one with an official handicap so anywhere that requires handicap certificates is a no-go unfortunately. Played Gorleston and Royal Norwich in recent years and enjoyed them both, may well play Gorleston again this time but looking for a few new ones too.

Aldeburgh is meant to be very good. Came out at #31 (i think) in a rival mags top 100 courses in England!! Not sure bout hcap restrictions though.

Thanks Dave, looks very nice though it seems they only allow 2-balls on their main course . Might give the 9 hole course a look though, might even be able to get my brother round that too

Been looking at Yarmouth + Caister GC, anyone played it?

Hey Potor

I've played Caistor and didnt like it. It just didnt do it for me at all but I know people that do like it. Its situated right on the racecourse and near caravan parks and some of the holes were awful IMO.

If I were you i'd take a trip to play Rookery Park , South Lowestoft. Thats a tricky course but with some excellent holes and the last time I was there it was in very good condition. Lots of doglegs so you dont always need driver ,plenty of ponds and OOb to keep you honest too. Lovely setting , plenty of trees and quiet at a very good price too. £20 after 2 pm.

Caldecott Hall is close too although i've never played there but i've heard its a pretty nice course. Cromer or Sheringham are the best up there but are expensive.

If you come into Norwich there are a few to choose from but all are much of a muchness. Sprowston Manor , Eaton , Bawburgh , Costessey , Dunston hall , Barnham Broom etc. All of them will give you a decent round of golf.

Drove past Sheringham GC last week. It looked crazy, right on the cliffs and lots of hills. Hunstanton is good as well but even futher round the coast.

Thanks Jammy, for £20 Rookery Park would be a good deal as I too have heard good things about it. Unfortunately their website says they ask for handicap certificates though and the 2 guys I'll be playing with don't have them. Might give Caldecott Hall a go as its so close, just looked on google earth and you're right - Caistor is right in the middle of the racecourse and next to a whole bunch of caravans. Not what I want as I'll be staying in one of the damn things all week :p

Last time I was there my Uncle invited me for a game at Wensum valley in Norwich.

A bit of a trek from Great Yarmouth but I thought it was a really great course and worth the drive.

Not played it myself but I have been told that Royal Cromer is a great track also - a bit expensive though!!

You're extremely unlikely to get asked for a HC cert at Rookery Park. As a current member there I have to say it's well worth a visit.

Cromer is a nice course but very hilly and you need to be fit to get around, also its a big advantage to carry at Cromer, as pushing a trolley up those slopes is a right pain. Barnham Broom has two courses, (the Hill and the Valley), as does Wensum Valley. I also have heard good things about Caldecott Hall but never played it.

Sorry HickoryShaft mate

Potor whatever you do dont go to Wensum Valley. Just dont think about it and go and play all those other lovely courses everyone has mentioned.

Wensum valley used to be awfull but it has improved in the last couple of years. Caister is a great course, half links/half parkland. Thorpeness is one of my favourites and you can often pick up a deal there. My own course, bawburgh, is in great condition at the moment and can be played for £20 if booked thru one of the t times websites.

Hmmm,

Maybe it was the free game, the good company, the fact I won the day or the excellent beer that made me remember it was a fantastic day out.

Thinking about it, it was definitely the beer I seem to remember being a bit tipsy afterwards celebrating the win. I can only remember about 3 holes :o :o

Been passed Sheringham many times and it looks such a unique course. Its on a cliff face and very up and down. It got highly rated in a rival mag a few months ago. Also Dunston Hall looks a really nice course as well and from what I hear highly recommended.

Played Cromer, Royal Norwich and Hunstanton during a weeks "tour" of Norfolk.
Also played Brancaster and Barnham Broom.
Hunstanton was superb, Cromer was lovely, but very windy. Enjoyed Royal Norwich, superb parkland course.
Didn't like Brancaster, bloody place was like one massive great bunker with sand everywhere. Very interesting clubhouse, heaps of history. But didn't enjoy the course, too many blind shots.
And Barnham Broom? Crap with a capital "C".....
clover everywhere, you could hit a ball straight up the middle and lose it in clover.
Very mundane layout too we thought.
