Looking for a course recommendation for me and a couple of friends, somewhere different from our usual haunts. Somewhere within a couple of hours of Southampton, not ridiculously expensive and that doesn't insist on handicap certs, as my friends, while they are certainly no mugs at the game, aren't members anywhere so don't have one.
Any good suggestions? Cheers

Budget is probably needed, couple of hours from saints is a pretty wide net! You have all the posh Surrey courses (some not so posh ones that are cheaper!) right across to Bristol or even Cardiff and up to about Birmingham!

My idea of not ridiculous is circa £50 max.

Thats probably about right, give or take a couple of quid. We did Celtic manor last year so thats the sort of standard were looking for, but not paying Wentworth prices for it!

Forest of Arden, Old Thorns, Sutton Green, Collingtree Park and East Sussex National are but a handful of really good courses.

Camberley Heath.

£49 Weekdays £59 Weekends. Best value Surrey Heathland course imo

States Certs preferred, but I've never been asked and pretty sure it would be OK-ed. Worth confirming though - even saying no longer members anywhere.

Parkstone GC here in Poole , best condition course in Dorset at this moment in time bar none, worth your green fee , If you want a flat course which is pay n play , Canford Magna, others are Moors valley , Poultons Park , Meyrick Park , give Queens park a miss , great course , lots of history but ruined by dog walkers , Barton on Sea is also worth a visit as is dibden golf centre , .............goodluck

Old Thorns at Liphook is a good shout, variety of holes nice views, and if you have a look online they sometimes have a deal that gets you lunch or a Bar Snack thrown in but you must book in advance as they won't do the deal on the day if you just rock up.
The most evil greens I have played on this year was at Donnington just north of Newbury rest of the course is a bit benign. Not sure how they might have faired in the recent heat.

Presumably you mean Donnington Grove rather than Valley. DG has some really good holes, though a couple of long walks where the bypass cut through (in spite of Swampy's best efforts)!

If you are going to play a Donnington course, make sure its grove. much better course, as Foxholer says, a few long walks but they often do decent deals on midweek green fees and its the one course i would consider getting a buggy.

Sandford Springs is an interesting one to look at, in between Newbury and Basingstoke, has 3 very different 9 holes, a nice place to go play 27 holes. think its Woods, lakes and Park. I quite enjoy a knock round there.

Let me know if you want any more suggestions near me,

I'm slightly biased ;) but at the moment the course is in superb shape with the greens arguably the best in the area ( orginally owned by the Japanese who spent millions on the greens) and fairways are back to lush......there's a good hotel on sight, fab views and decent, non stuffy atmosphere in the bar, good food and choice of beer, Sky Sports etc. It was well designed by a Dave Thomas, prices are on the website and competitive but get yourselves a buggy to enjoy it more as the walk can catch you out if youre your not used to it! It held a Jamega Tour event last week, and its held a Euro Pro before but to its credit and off the yellows there's plenty of chances of taming the beast!! Ill be shocked if you didnt have a good day. Let me know if you want any more info.

Didn't think you could get on Camberley, which is why I didn't mention it, but that's one of the nicest courses I've played in years.

Thanks all, I'd completely forgotten about Old Thorns, think we might try for there.

I am a member of Hockley of which I could definately recommend. Stoneham is an excellent course nearby although it might be a bit pricey. One more I would recommend that you may have played right on your doorstep is Bramshaw. :)

Spookily I had around there with my lad this afternoon

on the Forest course. £47 for the two of us, now Ive played it I wouldn't pay £4.70 to play it again!

Sorry to hear that mate. Only played the Manor Course there which I felt was very good. I have a mate who is a member there who does not play the Forest course too often.
