Golfshot iPhone App

I think it all depends on how relaxed your golf club is about GPS.. My club took a while to agree to them, but have never really looked into what does or does not conform.

I believe that because a Iphone can download things like windspeeds and compasses, it is illegal in competitions, but our club wouldnt have a clue you were using one, unless someone mentioned it to the commitee afterwards..

why is the iphone app cheating? I was looing at getting this and at £17.99 it seems a good deal, was also looking at a rangefinder but the price tags are a wee bit off putting

I have got golfshot and it is a good piece of software. I think under general rules it is banned unless your club has a local ruling to override this. I dont use mine as much anymore I tend to only play one course but you can record a lot of stats on there.

Only reason it is not allowed under general ruling is due to the compass application which cannot be deleted which means you can get gradient of greens etc. Not because of weather apps as any phone that can access any internet would be banned and this is not the case.

Not getting into this... I have golfshot GPS, my club allows it in competition play as I have approached them personally. I choose not to use it as all the course markers are accurate and I can use them fine.
I'd be happy using it in comps as I am allowed but tend not to use in at all (practise or comp) these days.
That's enough of this for me...

please do not call using golf shot cheating, you only cheat by using the phone for other information. cheating is not playing to the rules.
it is a complete misunderstanding by the r and a on this type of equipment.
it should be any golf rangeing device, or non, and use your judgement skill.
i have made several comments on this, and it still annoys the [****] out of me. why pay hundreds of pounds instead of £18, or something similar, with no annual fee.
perhaps some people have a vested interest ;)
shagster :D

Yes the rule is flawed, we had this at length a while back. But the rule is there, if you use a phone with a compass etc etc etc etc etc then you are contravening the rule.
Yes the R&A need to sort this mess out once and for all but until they do the rule is there.
And you can't ignore a Rule of Golf.

Still trying to figure out how you can get a gradient from a compass on the phone...
Theoretically you can have an illegal ball in your bag but not use it...why is this different?

CK, ive addressed this with R&A and their response was something along the lines of " we are looking at smartphone rulings in detail ".

the problem is even if most club level players know that the gradient is 6% uphill, they have a 8mph north/north westerly wind, and the weather is 8*, they will still only execute the shot 100% as intended one in ten max.

As i pointed out to the R&A if i have the option to measure gradient and whether on my smart phone, and distance with a sky caddie, i still have the option to break the rules if i wish.

The weather app is void in my opinion as its on accurate to the nearest weather tower, which could be 10 miles away, so a 10mph wind there could be 20mph where you are.

The only issue with the iPhone is the compass. Everything else is not instantaneous info such as temperature and wind.
You can delete any apps using the accelerometer function for gradient so that leaves the compass. But what a compass is useful for on a golf course I don't know. If you don't know the instantaneous wind direction then the compass is useless.
Old fashioned grass throw into the air tells me everything I need to know about the windspeed and direction.

I can see a reversal of the iPhone/smartphones rules as they don't actually have the information the R&A originally thought they were capable of.

Some clubs like mine have reviewed it and enforced a local rule allowing them to be used so maybe more and more these days are following suit.

As for smartphones being 'cheating'... Can't agree unfortunately but we all know it's the interpretation of the rule and how the R&A incorrectly categorised it. I'd allow anyone to use one if I was in a comp.
