Golfshot gps

Does anyone on here use the Golfshot GPS on there phone and if so is itas good as the Freecaddie as am deliberating over which one to get.

Have a look at the latest GM as they have a full feature on DMD's (distance measuring devices)

...which I have been waiting ages for, only to be very disappointed. It felt like quite a superficial report in the end and failed to mention many of the features available on many of the units.

The scoring system was massively flawed in that a category for 'download ease' was included, which clearly doesn't apply to some (which meant full marks), yet the Freecaddie only got 13/15 for value for money! Apparently, the iPhone app at £18 is better value!

I won't quibble with the prices (although all units can be be bought easily for considerably less than the prices listed) but I honestly do not think that this is a good, detailed or accurate review of units for people looking to get into this market.

Disappointing.

Steve, There's a review in the mag I received today.
I got an Itouch for xmas and downloaded Golfshot straight away. I used it yesterday at Wychwood Golf course and I found it very very easy to use and set up. Over 20K courses available. As mentioned I've got the touch so I downloaded the course at home when I had a connection. I would also suggest you do this if you have the Iphone as I'm sure it will take ages to download through the phones modem. I'm not sure if it will work exactly the same on the phone as it does on the Itouch but as I had no active GPS finder I could get exact distances. You are able to move a marker to where you think you are and it will give you the distance to the green. I'd be interested to know if the one on the phone pin points your position and works out the accurate distance as I'm looking to upgrade to the Iphone. The images it uses are from google earth so it shows you all the detail you need to know and as long as the course hasn't made any drastic changes in the last few years they'll be pretty accurate. I also found the scoring feature great. I've never used one of these before and I used it for all 4 of us. It was great, just put the gross scores in and it works all net scores and stableford points for you. You have to set each golfer up before hand which only takes a minute but saves time working scores and points out.
For a cheap gps kit this is great and if the software for the phone can pinpoint your position then I'd even pay £17.99 again when I upgrade to the Iphone and loose my version. I've just had a very quick look at Freecaddie and it doesn't look like it has a map of the hole you are playing showing bunkers and hazards. For this reason alone I would suggest using Golfshot, I may be wrong about this as I've only had a very quick look as I'm writing this.

anyway, I you do get Golfshot for the Iphone I'd be interested to find out if it pin points your location so it gives you accurate distances as this would be the main reason for me upgrading to the phone.

I've used the scorecard only version and found it to be excellent. Support is brilliant. Had an issue over xmas and they fixed it for me within a day.

New version just out has UK handicap system and now has stableford scoring as well.

I was a devout teeshotlive user for over a year but switched to golf-shot after EA Games took over the product. Support is non-existent now and they removed some of the best features. Syncing with OOBGolf, and intoduced a ton of bugs.

I've just downloaded the GPS version and I'll be using it tomorrow alongside my sky caddie and I'll let you know what I think. But from the play around I've had this afternoon, it looks the part.

Am I the only one that think that the reviews was a little unfair on the GPS software?
I know the iPhone is the 'it' phone but it is renowned for having a lousy GPS.
Now the higher end Windows Mobile and Android based phones seem to cope far better with this software, than the lowly iPhone (Especially the non-3GS version).
So they used a slow phone with bad GPS...no wonder the software didn't come off as well as I perceive it should.
So i'm adding 2 points to value for money (Errmm it's free and even bought it's 1 tenth the price of dedicated units)
2 points for performance (Shouldn't use an iPhone, winmo+android = more phones than iPhone)
5 points for ease of use (Barring that he had to map the course that shouldn't have been a detractor; the new version is very simple to use)
Taking freecaddie to a more respectable 61/85

ok, I only ended up using the GPS function for 2-3 holes.

With my SkyCaddie attached to my bag, all I needed to do was look down and get the yardage. Whereas with golfshot, I'd have to get it out my pocket, unlock the screen then get the yardage.

Sounds minor, but if you do that on each shot it's a bit of a pain.

I think if I had something to attach it to my bag it would be easier. But then it would make putting in the score at the end of the hole a bit more cumbersome.

You also would probably need some kind of waterproof cover for it if was attached to the bag as well.

For scoring I think these are fine. You can just take it out at the end of the hole and put the score in. Not a pain. But having to get it out each shot was.

From what I saw the GPS seemed pretty accurate compared to my SkyCaddie. Maybe a yard or two's difference here and there.

I could see this being useful for an unfamiliar course, with the aerial view that you could have a quick look at before you tee of each time.

I'm going to try to give it a go again tomorrow, probably need to find a more efficient way to use it.

The software itself is clear and easy to use and great functionality. So I have no issues with the app from that angle.

Hi Westy,
I've got my Iphone on order at the minute as they done come out on my network until the 14th. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to using the golfshot software. I understand the waterproof issue but surely it can't be that much hassle to get it out for each shot. You could get it out walking to the ball. Does it take a while to fix your location?

Nah, it's not a major issue. It's just not as easy as just looking down at my bag, where I have my skycaddie, when I get to my ball. That's all.

I don't have to touch any buttons etc (Unless I want distances to hazards, and that's only a quick push of the target button).

You could probably do the same with the iPhone with a clip attachment and just turn off the screen lock. And if you get a clip attachment that you can just pop out your phone to enter the scores at the end of the hole. Then that would probably work well.

As I say, I don't think it's a major issue really, just not quite as practical as the SkyCaddie.

But then again £17 vs ~£200 I'm sure many people would put up with this.

I understand what you mean about being able to look down and see your yardage but there's no way in this world I can shell out over £200 so it's a no brainer for me. I used used my Itouch the other day and I just had a look while I was waiting to play my shot.
Compared to all the others it should get 15 out of 15 for value for money.

I'll let you know how I get on with it

I used golfshot for most of my round yesterday. And to be honest if I didn't have the SkyCaddie I'd be perfectly happy with it.

Only major comment was the time for the GPS to settle sometimes. Until it had settled I noticed at 10-20 yard difference between gofshot and my SkyCaddie. Once it had settled there was maybe 1-2 yards variance. Where my SkyCaddie was instant.

All in all I can't really fault the software.

Performance on distance measurement. Is it as good as a dedicated GPS solution. No I don't honestly think so.

And it does have some really useful features you don't get on some\all dedicated units.

- Great scoring and statistics recording built in (For you and your partners). Reviewable from iPhone or on-line.
- Aerial views of holes showing distances to hazards, layups etc.
- E-mail final scorecards to you and your Partners
- Now has Auto Handicap Calculation (Including Congru system).

And no annual subscription or course download fees !

The only other slight niggle I do have is that I found myself messing around with it walking down the fairway. Nothing major if you're on your own. But I felt at times I was 'ignoring' my playing partners which is a little rude really.

But at £17, if you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS, it is definitely well worth the money in my opinion. The niggles I have with it are very minor.

Hope this info helps.
