Pretty broad question this but Im looking for somewhere possibly in the midlands or in the central belt of Scotland for a golfing weekend for my brothers stag party. Wont be a load of idiots tying him to lamp-posts or anything like that but want somewhere with a pretty good atmosphere and a couple of decent golf courses nearby. There are a couple of single figure golfers going but mostly the standard is 18 upwards to 28 so dont want to be playing on Carnoustie!

Just wondered if any of you lads had any suggestions, I'm just thinking about it at the minute and I've got plenty of time to sort it out. I thought about midlands or central scotland as its pretty easy to get to from the North-East and he has already ruled out going abroad (he's an accountant and tighter than a duck's arse!).

cheers is advance for any suggestions

Nice idea.

Some Scottish suggestions:
1. Fairmont at St Andrews Bay has two decent courses and a nice (5*) hotel, pretty reasonable prices. You're also near Crail, St Andrews etc. Might be a bit far to travel, though.

2. Edinburgh: great place for non-golf activities. Some great courses, especially down the coast. Maybe another Scottish poster could give more details on which courses to play

3. Glasgow: my home town and as good as Edinburgh for a night out. Some great courses all over the suburbs. East Renfrewshire, Cawder (my course), Milngavie are all worth a shot. The advantage of Glasgow is you are not far from the west coast/Ayrshire where you are spoilt for choice.

yeah Edinburgh or glasgow could be great for a night out and decent restaurants etc, dont really know my way around but thats not too much of a problem. Edinburgh is very easy to get to being on the East Coast main line too, Are those courses mentioned pretty good as far as visiting parties are concearned? Glasgow would be pretty easy to get to as well either train or car, I'll add those courses to my list (actually they will be the first ones on an empty list so far :D!), thanks for the advice mate.

Going on a golf stag do myself in May but way up north to Dornoch, Tain and Brora, can't wait - all good tracks.
As for you, you could do worse than going a wee bit further to Blairgowrie (2 courses), then over to Gleneagles, then maybe up to Crieff. All nice scenic places with plenty pubs and easy to get to from central belt.

Endless places, what about Perth, great nite out? Some good courses that arent too taxing for any of you like King James,Murryshall,Aylth and Craigiehill (bloody hilly tho as the name suggests!)or not too far away Crieff,St fillans etc.Edinburgh great for you getting to but playing over weekend may be a struggle but again courses like Montonhall,Duddingston,Braid Hills,Murrayfield all easy access from City centre.

I am part of a 15 strong group who have been going away on a golfing weekend in Scotland for the past 7 years. This year we're off to East Berwick and will be playing The Glen, Longniddry and Gullane. Based on past experience I can thoroughly recommend Inverness and Nairn where there is decent Pubs and excellent Golf Courses (Fortrose, Boat of Garten, Nairn West and Nairn Dunbar).
If this is too far away, then Fife is blessed with an abundance of excellent Golf Courses. I would recommend the Lundin Links Hotel and nearby Lundin Links GC. Also Crail, Balbirnie Park and Elie are well worth a visit.

I've played Dalmahoy a few times. The championship course is a monster, not a personal favourite of mine but still a decent trek. Get buggies if you can, it's very long. The "Wee Course" is pretty decent.

The hotel would be a very good base for such an event, decent food and nice bars. Also a reasonable swimming pool and facilities.

yeah it could be perfect, its around £135 each to stay in the hotel for 2 nights and the golf would be extra, could be a winner as its easy to get to so if a few more people needed to come for just a night out in Edinburgh on the second night they could do it easily. The championship course could be a bit of a slog for some of the high handicappers like, but I wouldnt mind trying it out. Would getting a Tee time here on a friday and saturday morning in June be a problem in your experience??

Im sure everyone would enjoy a night out in Edinburgh too, could be good this!

I would think if you book everything thro the hotel that getting golf at anytime will not be a problem epsec if you book it well in adv.The Champ course may be bloody long but it aint tight really so you may as well give it a go I would think from the Yellow tees it will play around 6600yrds tho.
Keep in mind that taxis into Ed city centre at night will set u back prob £30 a taxi as it is a good 7 to 8 miles outside town.

£8.40 for a Gin & Tonic is hardly bloody reasonable. You may get a discounted room rate at times but the food which I was most unimpressed with and the drink are disgusting price wise.

I would recommend a flight to Inverness, stay in the highland capital, Fortrose & Rosmarkie, Spey Valley or Boat of Garten, a contrast in courses and Inverness offers a great night out!

As someone who stays just a mile from Dalmahoy you might want to check Taxi prices from Edinburgh after a night out. £25 pound it costs me if you miss the last bus at 11:50pm

Mate,

Can fully recommend Edinburgh had my stag weekend up there last year.

Plenty of good places to stay, good bars and if you do manage to eat any food, then there are some really good places to eat as well.

As for the golf i cannot comment but i am sure there must be some good courses near by.

Have a good one :D
