We have just started looking into options for my stag do for August 2017. I would be keen to hear people’s ideas for 4-6 golfers. I would like the trip to be about the golf so not bothered about the social aspect (this is being taken care of in another trip). Ireland or Scotland would be my preference but I do not know a lot a lot about inland courses there. We have the following criteria;

  • 3 nights with 3/4 rounds
  • Only playing a maximum of one links course
  • Ideally 1 “marquee” course
  • Flights/ travel not too expensive
I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Based on your criteria I would look at somewhere like Gleneagles.

Stay in Southport for some great evening entertainment, play Hillside as your links course, Formby Hall as 1 of your Parkland courses and Formby as a hybrid course, although it's a links course, it has a Heathland feel to it also IMO.

Ireland:

Dublin area - Portmarnock, K Club, lots of third choices. I like Hermitage a lot, could do Druids Glen.

North West - choice of many Donegal links and Lough Erne as a parkland luxury option

Kerry - Ballybunion (or choice of other links), Killarney x 2 (parkland courses)

Belfast - RCD, Belvoir Park, Malone (both parkland)

My first choice at the moment is flying into Dublin, Portmarnock (hotel course not championship), K Club (Palmer) and Druids Glen (glen course), what do you think?

Possibly slightly left field bit how about Holinwell, Sherwood Forest and either Coxmoor which is great club 5 mins from Hollinwell or possibly go a bit further north to Lindrick?

We did the K Club last year and Druids Glen.

Druids Glen the hotel was cracking, the course average at best. The par 3s are the only thing worth shouting about.

K Club was decent but not great.

Yeah the 13th, 15th and 18th aren't memorable at all. Druids Glen has one of the best back nines I've ever played and is widely regarded as one of the best parkland courses in Ireland. To say it is average at best must mean your standards are pretty tough to meet.

Depends on your budget. K Club has shot up it's prices having hosted the open. The travel and awkwardness of going from Portmarnock - K- Club and then to Druids could be annoying. You could do 2 nights and 2 rounds and Druids Glen resort (Heath then Glen) and then scoot up and stay and play at Portmarnock hotel which would offer good value.

Another option would be 2 nights with 2 rounds at Druids and then up to the K club for a 1 night and 2 rounds deal.

I didn't think my standards are that high but now you mention it :D

We played in June and the condition was really average, it was the least impressive between Druids, Carton House and K Club IMO.

Agree on the 18th as it was a good hole after the drive.

Mount Juliet is miles ahead of Druids Glen as a parkland course.

This or if you fancy Scotland St. Andrews complex...New is great and there are a shed load of other around such as Kingsbarns etc.

NOrth Norfolk would be a great shout too. Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster) - Marquee, Sherringham - Clifftop , Hunstanton (links), Royal Cromer - Clifftop and if you need a parkland option then Kings Lynn is very good too.

Most of Scotland's marquee courses are links rather than Inland.
However you could have a really pleasant time playing some highland course such as Boat of Garten Grantown on Spey and Kingussie all very beautiful and enjoyable golf.
You could nip up to Nairn as a destination course and the one links course.
All pretty convenient if you can fly to Inverness.
