Hi all,

I've been invited by some old school friends to join their society.

Does anybody have any experience of a society that can offer some insight about how they operate?

What is the general feeling towards societies?

Gareth

i used to play in a pub 1 , was a great way to get into golf make new friends , learn new stuff , and play lots of different courses

usually pay a litttle bit more to play but sometimes some decent prizes for nearest pin, longest drive etc

i only left cos i couldnt justify the dough as welll as joining a club

as above, can be a great day out! just dont go there expecting to win anything unless you shoot 40 points, they are the breeding ground for bandits as usually there is no official handicap requirement and some unscrupulous people claim inflated handicaps... like the chap i played in one with who got 28 h/cap as he hadn't played for 3 years. (when he was off 12!) he scored 43 i think with 2 5's thrown in there!

HA! the one i played in was pretty good , guests couldnt win , which i found out on my 1st appearance!!!!and if you were a member of a club that was your starting h/c ,

Ive been a member of a pub society for acouple of yearsnow, all the positivesfrom above posts really, except we use a site called masterscoreboard.co.uk as handicaps go up/down the same as it would if you were a club member. Oh and for new members they need to play 3 times before entering the prize pool, with their handicaps calculated from the three scores submitted.

Dont be so sure about old mates being honest, you will only be disappointed.

Not a bad rule. Though I occasionally played in one where there were 'Member Prizes' and 'Guest Prizes'. Means there's still competition, but banditry is either known about/controlled or simply ignored.

I take part in one when they do their charity events (about 4 a year) as a guest. I really enjoy it and know im not likely to win however ive had closest approach and was pipped for nearest the pin by an inch or so last time out.
I would rather join a club than play with a society week in week out.

I play in two and both run slightly differently. For both handicap is based primarily on your official one unless you aren't a member somewhere. No real issues ever caused by this though. Both also operate a 2 shot cut for winning, 1 for second.

Prizes are usually very good. One is mainly golf stuff or booze. The other is mainly cash and booze with a few golf things as prizes.

I never take these days too seriously and it is about catching up with old mates and having a laugh. Usually a silly score wins!

Agreed, I played in a charity day on Friday, a particular 'gentleman' came in with 51 points, he actually had the chutzpah to get up to receive his prize, he got the bird from everyone there and quickly decided it would be better to hand it back to be auctioned for the charity, he happily took his team prize tho'. We just laughed as we had a really good honest team score, what can you do ?
