Here's one for a dreich Tuesday afternoon - what happended to the obligatory leather flap on golf shoes that folded down so it covered the laces. Normally had a bit of a pattern and was tassely on the end. Up until a few years ago a golf shoe was not a golf shoe without one of these flaps.
Personally I dont like them but can you still get them or have they been resigned to history? :D

I have a pal who as a youngser played a round of golf in a pair of brogues on one of the Edinburgh courses as he'd forgotten his golf shoes. It wasn't until after the game when they were changing shoes in the carpark, tut tut, that some old codger came storming over ranting -

"you can't play in those shoes!"...
"We've already played"....pause...
"You can't play in those shoes!"
"We're leaving now"
"you can't play in those shoes!"
etc etc

I wonder if he's still there! :D

Bloke was wearing a pair at the range few weeks ago, they were a white adidas pair with a little adidas logo on the end of the tongue, they looked so nice and classic.

Im not one for Golf fashion but they looked awesome! Especially with a classic penguin polo and smart trousers.

Are brogues the same as trainers?

Are brogues the same as trainers?

Brogues are stout leather shoes, usually with a commando sole as worn by farmers and country gents.

Kilties.......I think you sweaties can still get them to go with your skirts....

Hey Mr Nike, less lip please or we'll send down more politicians to run your country!

This is a golf forum and the Scots gave you the great game, so be grateful for that at least. Suppose you could run the country better?

Anyway,

From one spat to another. These spats thingies. Weren't they designed to keep the mud and rain out of your laces? Not seen them in the more modern shoes but had them in my first pair of FootJoys. They were awful fiddly and rather particular to golfers. Glad they seem to have disappeared.

During my first stint at golf finished 7 years ago I was still using shoes with the syrups on them. Funy that since they are rare these days Ive not missed them.

I remember buying a pair of patent black Dexter (what happened to them??) golf shoes back in my assistant pro daays (circa 82). Top of the range with leather soles spikes and a shiny leather tongue with a gold D on.

I wore them with the flap for a while but as they were a brogue design I decided they looked better without. That was the last time I saw a pair of golf shoes with them on.

I have to say it suited certain designs better. I think classic one coloured shoes in a brogue or normal shoe design worked well but when you saw some of the summer shoes of the time with these flaps on they really did look ridiculous. I had a mate who could never get the hang of how to lace them on and so every time he walked theses two tongues would flap like the ears of a dog. Very amusing

Don't you wish they were still available?

Just a question really.

Want to get my hubby a pair of golf shoes for his birthday as his others are a bit old, want to spend around £70 ish can anyone advise a non-golfer what I should buy him? :D

Thanks

Hi Kate, You would get a much better response if you started a new thread on the main forum.

And Toad I really do like them.
