...or any kind of shoe pain.

I bought a pair of golf shoes (FJ AQL) last week and wore them for the first time at the weekend.
By the end of my game they had worn the skin away on both legs where my achilles tendon is, so much so that my normal shoes and trainers now hurt to wear.

What's the best way you've found of making them bearable to wear while they're breaking in. That's assuming that they will get better, as I don't want to throw them in the bin.

Always wear thicker socks when i have new golf shoes, they do feel like there too small for your feet but works a treat.

Did make the mistake of wearing ankle socks with new golf shoes i have now and wasnt a pleasant sight after the round!

I wouldnt say its just cos they are brand new, its probably more of a sizing issue, too much movement in the heel area

maybe wear a 2nd pair of socks, sports ankle type ones or failing that you can buy little heel pads. I find with some shoes its the stitching round the leather seam that causes it to rub and wear skin away.

Two things I've found to help:-

1)Because you've already broken the skin buy some of this :-

(link taken out as it didn't work) Basically it's that plastic spray on skin stuff.

about an hour before you leave the house spray some on your heels (and here's the trick) - let it dry properly. About 15 minutes.

then,

2) get some plain cotton wool pads - the Mrs' slap-up remover pads (you know- the round flat ones) and then strap that onto your heels with either some fabric strapping or fabric plaster strip (I'm not a rep. for Elastoplast honest). It has to be the fabric ones as they've got the best sticky stuff on them. Put one horizontal and one verticle on top of it so you've got a sort of padded cross. This will protect from lateral and vertical rubs until you can work out where the pinch point is.

A bit belt and braces I know but cheap compared to sending another pair of blood-clotted holed-out socks to the bin each round.

p.s if this doesn't break the shoes after about half a dozen rounds then bin 'em and buy another brand.

Cheers for the suggestions so far.

My older shoes are AQL's too, but they are half a size bigger. They're too big really and I have to wear 2 pairs of thick socks and they still feel a bit loose.
I still wore thick socks with the new ones, but only one pair.

The new ones shoes fit much better than my others, if it weren't for the rubbing at the back.

I've just got normal plasters on now which is making wearing my normal shoes bearable, so the cotton wool and tape sounds good.

Aztecs: I only bought them because they were cheap cheap. If I'd have had a budget for yours I think I'd have gone out and tried a few pairs on and avoided this problem, but I didn't because I missed out on a bargain 2 iron and spent too much on the 3 iron version. ;)

Do what we used to do in the Army

Piddle in them and leave overnight

empty and rinse

put them on with socks and wear until dry

they will have moulded themselves to the shape of your feet

Simples

I've never worn a new pair for 18 holes straight out of the box. Always wear them for practice or going to the range a few times and then try them out by doing 9 holes.

In all sports I have done, (Rugby, cricket, golf, football, basketball) I have always worn two pairs of socks. The outer one to move with or against the shoe and the inner one with the foot. I have never had a problem of blistering.

I always use Footjoy either AQL in Summer or Dryjoy in Winter and make sure the shoes are big enough. This has not been easy as I take 13/14 but I have never had a problem with Footjoy.

Sometimes manufacturers change the style slightly and so adjust the fit. Maybe Footjoy have done this?

Fragger

I remember doing this Fragger when I was in the Army, but only once after mistaking my wardrobe for the toilet....That Stag bitter was pretty strong :) :) :D :D

On a serious note, footjoys straight on out the box, just like slippers. ;)

Fragger : Thanks, maybe later

robbest : I wasn't measured for them, but my old ones are loose so I ordered half a size smaller. They 'feel' like they fit well, just the top of the back is a bit harsh.

Trevor : That would've been sensible. I wish I was.

Homer : Can't afford the posh ones :)

Bigfoot : My other ones were bought in 2008 so quite likely they changed the design slightly. I just thought "Footjoy, won't be a problem".

I'm going to wear my old ones until I've healed (no pun intended) then break them in with plenty of padding on me.
In the meantime will dubbin them and maybe squidge them about a bit while I'm sitting down doing nothing.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

:D sorry mate. I somehow feel indirectly responsible for your shoe pain woes.:( You're not getting the 2 iron though ;)

No problem. Other than it was more expensive, I quite like the 3. Hit some rubbish with it at the weekend but distance-wise I think I might end up preferring it to a 2. I reckon the 3 should carry 205-210 and my 4 wood is 220-230. If I need 215 I'll live with 5yds away :)
