Evening, I've recently joined a golf club after giving up cricket and wanting a new challenge. My set is made up of a ping rapture 18° rescue wood and ping g25 irons 5 - pw so obviously needing some longer clubs, with having a young family I can't justify £300+ on a driver and fairway wood, what would people recommend that's affordable but still decent gear?

Thanks in advance
Andy

there is so much good gear for sale that you won't need to spend anywhere near £300, have a look through the for sale section on here, try ebay and golf bidder. May also be worth going into some local American Golf stores if you have any and see what they are trying to shift on due to their double trade in offer.

Yep no need to necessarily go and buy brand new. I have just picked up a Nike Vapor fairway wood and Vapor hybrid for a combined total of £78! Both in very good condition, just needed some metal polish on them and a touch of paint to tidy up a few marks and they looks as good as new. Will probably get them regripped this week at some point! Have a scout round on eBay, 'you will' find a bargain!

I also have what are effectively brand new taylor made rbz stage two 3 and 5 wood that I no longer use in the standard regular flex shaft that Id be willing to move on

Mark Crossfield just done a review.... TM sldr driver vs TM new M1 which is over £450... the former went a tad further. At our level I doubt you'd see much difference from the new offerings.

Only downfall is not much in the way of custom fit 2nd hand

Sometimes being in the rite place at the rite time helps, I over heard a chap at our club talking about trading his driver and 3-wood combo in for something new so I took the liberty of asking what he had and how much he wanted for it, I'm now the proud owner of a 'Callaway X2hot' driver and 3-wood combo all for the miserly sum of 80 quid, don't use em though as I can't hit the damn things straight...

tons of excellent clubs out there both new and used. TMs older woods are cheap as. that's the r1. r15
sldr and so on

I think these days you are more likely to find a bargain on gumtree than eBay.

Ebay is the way to go these days

or post on the for sale / wanted forum on here and ask what people got.. I needed (wanted lol) a 46 degree SM5 vokey (rare club to find) lost out on one on ebay and no others for sale.. posted on the for sale / wanted forum as a long shot and within a day I had one offered to me!

if you dont ask you dont get

Welcome to the mad house

There's plenty of bargains out there on older quality kit and I'm sure there's some forum members who will have a few bits gathering dust.

I've got a ping rapture v2 in my spare bag if you're intrested.

Thanks a lot for all the replies, I'm literally just getting going so think the SLDR might be too uncontrollable for me haha I need stiff shafts in my irons so guessing that's what I'll want in a driver too.

Thanks again guys look forward to getting more involved on here!

Hi,

Not sure were you are, but in the shed I have a Wilson driver or Taylor made 360 Ti driver or a callaway steel head driver (smaller head) you can have for free if you can collect(sorry cant be bothered to post). The Wilson and taylor made were used upto about a year ago by me and my son and tbh I don't find much difference to the newer drivers. All regular shafts tho.

I also have (original ones) adams tie lies fairway 3 wood and a 5 wood (5 wood is senior flex I think) that you can welcome to free again. I still play with the original tight lies myself (did try the more recently Ti ones from adams this year, but they hooked a lot, so have reverted but to theses, great woods and easy to hit off the fairway)

You are welcome to them assuming you are going to use them and can pick up.

cheers

Darren

Local pro's normally have some decent deals on!
Normally though you can pick up a good driver brand new for 100-160 might last years model! But rather be a year out and save up to 200 quid!
Or ebay - but be careful for dodgy dealers!

Get down to your local American golf, Gumtree is good. But eBay has the biggest deals to be had if you are smart with the sellers - try and get a deal out of people selling clubs locally to you on ebay - more likely to flex on price at the thought of cash in hand and you get to see the clubs before buying.

You can find some great bargains on Gumtree but you need to search regularly and act fast if a good deal comes up. Good thing is you can inspect the clubs and try to haggle the price. eBay can be good but you can't inspect the clubs (unless the seller is local) and it can be a pain if there is a problem and you need to return. Wider selection on eBay but prices tend to be higher than Gumtree to cover fees and postage. Also can find some great deals on used clubs in the pro shops and you can try before you buy and get the piece of mind from buying in a shop if any problem should arise.

Look on eBay for either older (Ping G5/10/20 etc) or for good quality but less fashionable brands like Adams, Bridgestone, Tour Edge Exotics etc and you will find a load of bargains.

Just had a quick search on Adams XTD and you could get a driver and 3 wood for around £100 for both, top quality clubs just less fashionable than Titleist/TM/Ping etc so second hand prices are rock bottom

i think you'll be fine. i got going in july. about 2 months in, i bought a new SLDR driver through a seller on ebay. i have no issues hitting that club at all.

You can pick up a good condition G25 driver and fairways for a decent price which would match your irons (not that matching them will matter). The good thing about quality second hand clubs is if you can buy at the right price and you end up not liking them you can normally sell them on without much of a financial loss.

Also if your on facebook there is a lot of golf equipment selling groups, nationally and usually locally to you. Lot of pro shops advertise their used stock and special deals though facebook groups.
