Staying at the in laws next week near Havant, can anyone recommend a course around the area, only going to get one round in and probably going to be twilight, don't want to spend a fortune or if there are any that take 2 fore 1

Havant and Waterlooville is a nice course not sure if you have to play with a member though? Paultons in nearby Romsey is nice as well it's a crown course and twilight golf is about £15 I think? Failing that Southwick park overlooks Pompey and isn't to bad. I play there mostly but that's cause I get armed forces discount

Hi,

Some interesting posts so far, so as a Portsmouth based player I thought I would give yo my own personal run down. All the courses are within 20-30 mins drive from Havant:

Members Courses:

Waterlooville
Rowlands Castle
Hayling Island
Corhampton
Lee on the Solent
Southwick Park

All of the above are traditional members courses. You wont get on any of them without stumping up £35 without a member. Hayling is a great links courses, Waterlooville and Rowalnds are Parkland and Corhampton is a downland courses. Im biased as Corhampton is my home club however I have played them all in the last year and its a toss up between Hayling and Corhampton as to the best greens. Both Waterlooville and Rowlands are overated IMO, with Lee on the Solent the shortest of the lot. Dont bother with Southwick Park, it has some real problems at the moment thanks to the wet winter.

Privately owned members courses:

Petersfield
Cams
Wickham Park
Chichester
Meon Valley
Botley Park
East Horton

All of the above can be found on tee time websites etc, with some excellent twilight deals available. Cams is probably the best although I haven't played it since May last year so I dont know what the condition is like. Chichester has two courses, if you go there the Cathedral is challenge and the tower is a bit of a field. Meon Valley and Botley Park are at the higher end of the spectrum and are probably jointly the best condition wise. East Horton has a good twilight deal which off the top of my head is £17, however its still very wet.

Municipals:

Portsmouth GC (Crookhorn)
Great Salterns (Southsea GC)
Furzely

All 3 have very cheap twilight deals. Furzely is mainly a par 3 course with a few par 4s thrown in. Portsmouth GC is on top of the hill overlooking the city and has some amazing views and one or two incredible holes, unfortunately being a municipal it can be hit and miss condition wise, although im told it has improved markedly in recent years. Salterns is ok but again has suffered because of the winter.

Ive probably missed a few, we are lucky we have so many courses in the area!

IN summary:

Best Condition:

Corhampton or Hayling

Most Interesting:

Hayling (But pricey)

Best Views:

Portsmouth GC

Cheapest

You will probably get a time for less than a tenner at Portsmouth online

Closest:

Depends on where in Havant you are saying, but likely to be Rowlands, Portsmouth or Waterlooville

Previous Posts:

From Havant Paultons and Goodwood as mentioned in earlier posts are miles away, every course mentioned above is closer. There is no course called Havant and Waterlooville, and as much as I hate to disagree with the poster who mentioned Southwick you cannot see Portsmouth from Southwck, there is a whacking great hill in the way!!

Always thought it was called havant and waterlooville? My mistake I must have played at Havant? I know you can't strictly see Pompey from Southwick park but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a nice drive up the hill overlooking the city.

Forgot to to mention cams hall in Fareham. That has a 9 hole course as well.

Is is southwick park In bad condition? I played there a couple of weeks ago and it was fine
