Hi all,

I received this email yesterday from My Golf Spy. I like this site and the reviews they do so I sat and read through the myths they were busting.

We have Cutting a driver shaft down, Head V Shaft, Anti spin lube, Are you lying about how far you hit the ball, and one of our favorites.... Tee fitting!

Is Longer really longer: http://www.mygolfspy.com/mgs-labs-is-longer-really-longer/

Head V Shaft: http://www.mygolfspy.com/mygolfspy-labs-head-vs-shaft/

Face Lube: http://www.mygolfspy.com/mygolfspy-labs-performance-enhancing-lube-myth/

Are you lying: http://www.mygolfspy.com/mygolfspy-labs-your-distance-reality-check/

Tee fitting:http://www.mygolfspy.com/mygolfspy-labs-golf-tee-wars/

To save you reading it if you dont want to I shall write the outcomes below, please remember I am just plagiarizing this as there are some "results" you will not like.

Longer is not longer.
Head and shaft are as important/influential as one another.
Face lube very much helps with back and side spin to a shocking amount!
Yes you are lying! but mostly about your longer clubs.
The right tee.... can give you distance... I know....

Shocking 5-Iron Numbers

Third, the average golfer needs to get rid of his long irons, which seems to include the 5 iron. (Mini rant: Big thanks to the OEMs for the jacked up lofts. You’re really helping the average guy enjoy the game more. (And yes, that’s sarcasm, folks.) Only our 4 lowest handicap players had an average within 10 yards of their estimate, the other 6 hit a COMBINED TOTAL of 1 shot within 5 yards of their estimate. Even if we exclude the two…characters…who missed their estimates by an average of 46 and 47 yards, we’re looking at an average miss of 16.5 yards. That can be the difference between being on the green and giving your ball a bath. You can attribute it to bad technique, lack of club head speed, too-strong lofts, or all of the above, but your average golfer does not hit their 5 iron with enough consistency to take it to the course. What’s worse, the super strong lofts let these guys hit the ball a mile, once in a blue moon, and create the expectation that a 5 iron should always go that far.

little word of warning about GI irons. I noticed mark crossfield mention about when he middled a GI iron compared to a slightly off centre strike. he said it just flew off the middle really hot.

he was testing some game improvement irons. he noticed that they had a tendency to really fly further than he ever hit say a 6 iron in his life when he caught one right out of the middle.

this sounds great. not really. you don't want these apparently magic yards appearing when you are hitting at a flag.

Here's one playing a 3 ball and one of the guys had just a acquired a new second hand driver in mint condition. It was a 2007 Cobra LD F speed in a stiff shaft for £30

He was slicing it and I asked if I could have a go. I creamed it out of the middle and hit a very good drive 10-15 yards past where I normally hit it with my RBZ fitted with a regular Matrix Ozik HD6 TP shaft to suit my swing.

Myth 1 - Driver technology has not moved on as far as the manufacturers would have us believe and fitting does not guarantee better results.

Myth 2 a stiff shaft does not always mean less distance for a slower swing speed.

I refuse to believe that I am lying about hitting my driver 400 yards. That would just be too much to handle.

One of the least scientific tests but also a good indicator of people having no idea about their distances is when they can't find their ball. Some of the guys I play with can be searching miles ahead of theirs and the look on their faces when you have to tell them to bring their bag back 30-40 yards to where it actually is really tugs at the heart strings.

That is when they tell you it would have rolled out to there if it was not in the rough....

Alex its like you have played a round with them.

Now I am always one to tell people I can drive it quite well but I always add the caveat that it is by no means a regular occurance and when you factor in my rubbish ones my distance is probably pitiful.

As a victim of being pulled back 40 yards to your ball when I started I now try and pay more attention and if it has gone in the rough try and walk up the edge from a lot further back.

Very interesting...

I know I'm missing the point here but...

They say "First of all, the average golfer has no concept of what “average” means. Ask a golfer how far they hit their driver “on average,” and you’re going to be told how far their best drives go"

I'd say this is roughly correct, but then I'd say "average" length (if we take average to mean the sum of all distances divided by the number of shots) is a completely useless thing to know for a golfer. Lets say I hit my 5 iron 160 yards 9 times and then duff it 2 cm... My average is around 150 meters...

The flag is 150 away with a pond at 160... Based on my average I'm good to go at the flag, but 9 times out of ten I'll dump it in the pond.

what they should be asking is how far do the majority of your shots go with a certain club... When I've got 150 to go, I'm hitting the club that goes 150 most of the time, not the one that averages 150.

Sorry rubbish maths, my average then is 144ish... So perfect (if I consider average distance) for the shot I describe, with flag a 150 and trouble at the back... But most likely I'll hit 160 and it will be in the water.

Interesting to know that Lubes help!!!

Are Lubes legal? Can DRS pick it up?
I am sure Aussies & Pieterson is reading this...
