Hi my first post guys/gals so go easy!

I have played on and off for years but this year I have started to take my golf far more seriously. I have now reached the stage where I can shoot low eighties (on a good day :) ) but I know I should be hitting the ball further from the tee (my max is circa 220 yards). Can anyone recommend a good golf instructor in the edinburgh area who might be able to give me a few extra yards? Regards.

Welcome to the forum CB.
If you have access to a video camera or a phone camera, you could film your swing, upload it to you tube and post the link on here.
There's a fair amount of knowledge on here and might save you a few bob in the process. :)

220 yards eh - that's roughly 200 yards further than Leftie......

Welcome to the forum. Most on here are OK and no-one bites - except Viscount17 but his therapist recommends LOUD trousers to combat that...... :o

I can't help you with a pro in your region, but I have a little anecdote to share.

Everytime I find a new pro, I say "I want to hit it further"

They always reply "everyone says that, better to hit it better and straighter"

then they see me play and say "actually, you're right, you DO need to hit it further!!" :)

well, some do. :o

For distance work on the x-factor, the x-factor being the x that is created crossing a line running across your shoulders and a line through your hips. The more you can separate the shoulder turn line from the hip turn line, the further you'll hit it. Turn your shoulders as far as you can but don't let the left arm fold - keep a lot of width going throughout.
That x-factor is where the torque and subsequent power is stored.
If you can combine a good turn (see above) with good weight transfer and time the uncocking of the wrists correctly you'll hit it a long way.
Simple!

If you want to hit it further, i find that working on core strength and balance is good, my flexibility is good, and when i keep my tempo and get it going out the middle of the face it goes very well, it is when i lose balance that i find my distance and acuracy suffer.
I guess if you get to a pro, he will be able to help you with that, is there not one at your golf club?

So you wouldn't recommend getting help from a qualified PGA Pro then, Bob?? :p :p

I'm a strong advocate of regular lessons but they will only help if you put the effort in to practice the drill and changes shown and accept that you'll take a few backward steps initially. Resist the temptation to go back to what feels comfy and stick with the new swing

Just had my first lesson. I was bunching up and giving myself no room to swing around myself. He got me to stand back which made me feel like I was a mile away. Sure enough, he shows me on the camera and my spine angle looks great.

It's a fault I know well. You feel as though you have a good position but are actually quite slouched. The pro at Sand Martins did a lot of work with me changing to a much more upright posture (as part of curing the shanks) and it does feel as though you are really stretching for it until you see it on video and realise what a perfct posture looks like. Keep with it and keep trying to get a picture every so often to make sure it stays the same

Be warned, I ordered the new pair last night!

welcome to the forum cb, but what's wrong with 220? if it's in the right place it beats any number of 300's in the shrubbery.
