Does anyone have experience getting lessons at New Malden?

I want to invest, and they are doing a great deal atm - pay for 8 and get 12. But, there are several pros there and I am not sure who would be best. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I am a beginner to an extent (played for last 4 or 5 months), but on the same token, I want to improve, not waste lots of money on really mundane tasks (even if they might be good for me! :D ). i.e just don't want to be treated like I have never picked up a club.

Any advice / ideas would be hugely appreciated!

Ian Clark would be the best guy to go with, but his lessons will be the most expensive, but he's very highly regarded, and has a great set-up. I've been to group lessons run by Jon Woodroffe too though, and he's a very good teacher, and very personable. I'd be going with one of those two.

I heard Ian was good. Presuming he would be decent with someone at my level as well?

At your level, it's highly likely that they will all go through the same process, so going to 'the best but most expensive' is likely to be as much, if not more, of a 'waste of money' than not going to a 'merely competent' one.

I'd avoid Group lessons for all but the very basic stuff - which you should already have, or the coach will sort out in the first 5-10 mins of the 1st 'lesson'.

I'd suggest that you 'interview the candidates' having set out what you want to achieve from the lessons, then see which of them best matches your goals - and how you want the lessons to be run, as it's a partnership, not a series of lectures! Don't be afraid to ask questions, particularly 'why', whenever you feel the need. One question that should be asked is whether they use video - and how. Video is great for seeing before vs after and showing/comparing your swing with 'optimum' ones. However, it takes a bit of additional work from the coach, so 'lazy/too busy' ones will be highlighted!

Good Luck!

Ian uses a number of training aids in all his lessons, to help with the learning procedure, all these training aids assist the students speed of learning.
GASP video- You will be able to see your swing, and Ian will be able to point out the flaws which are holding you back, you learn more from what you see than what you hear. The video analysis will be used throughout the lesson, for you to be able to see the progress you are making, the whole lesson will be recorded onto a DVD for you to take home and review, this will include voice over from Ian. As well as your swing analysis with a before and after of your golf swing.
K-Vest- The K-Vest has three wireless sensors which is revolutionising how physical motion is measured and how optimum performance is achieved in golf. This technology now makes it possible to capture and measure motion in real time, identifying swing faults, and then use the same technology to effortlessly and precisely communicate the correct movements back to the student, this technology is beyond video. Video is shot at 30 frames per second, and the K-Vest at 120 frames per second. The vest will give you a greater understanding of how your body moves throughout the swing, as you are able to view your swing from 360degrees with bio-feedback. Training with the K-Vest will enable you to get there faster, as learning with the K-Vest is 33times more effective than video. The visual and audio feedbacks enables the student to concentrate on their swing thoughts, yet are still able to know if they are in the right position.
P3 Pro Launch Monitor- The launch monitor is used to check your swing speed and ball speed, this will give valuable data for your golf swing, and will also tell you if your golf clubs are suited for you. Ian will make sure that your clubs are fitted, and if not will help advise you on any change that would be needed.

These are some of the tools he uses......

Duncan Woolger is very good. Think he was at Blue Mountain for a while and he taught a mate of mine to play at World of Golf

Duncan does look quite good and I think he is included in on the 8 for 12 deal!

Especially when Ian's prices are: £75 per hour, or you can purchase 4 one hour lessons for £280.

As I posted in the 'Is Distance Embarrassing' thread, 'best' isn't necessarily 'most appropriate', especially for a pretty much newbie seemingly looking to avoid 'waste of money'!

I'd challenge the need for the K-Vest at your level. Unless you progress really rapidly, Video - and review - should be fine. It's good to know that there are techno-tools available, but I believe they are only worth paying loads to use when there is some sort of consistency in the swing in the first place. Anything else is really just another way for a coach to extract cash from the client!

useful to know. Also found out Ian isn't included in the 12 for 8 offer, so will probably find someone else! :)
