One of my mates recently had his car broken into and his golf clubs stolen. Problem was that his car was parked on his driveway overnight, so no payout and he has to pay for all replacements. Most policies have an exclusion clause in relation to this, so check the small print. :(

Any idea if the exclusion from a golf insurance policy is because the car insurance would usually cover it or is it something else?
(I remember hearing that you can't or shouldn't have something insured twice at the same time)

Similar Q - is it the car policy that won't pay out (because of wrong parking place, ie not garage as claimed etc) or a golf policy because of duplicate cover / exclusion?

Car Insurance policies normally have a limit on what you can claim for property stolen from it, which is usually so low that it's not worth losing your no claims bonus for, and certainly not enough to buy a decent set of golf clubs and related gear. What you can't do legally is to claim twice for the same loss on two different policies.

Can you name and shame the company pal?

They also don't cover things that are insured by another policy

You can insure the same thing more than once - otherwise Golf Insurance companies wouldn't have a business model as home/content policies cover the equipment in part.

Issues would arise if you tried to make a claim on both policies as that is clearly fraud.

GolfCare have this on their Website:
"Q. Are my clubs insured in a car?

A. Yes, they are insured whilst travelling to, from and during a golfing event. This includes leaving them in a securely locked luggage area at the golf club between the hours of 8am and 10pm. If you require further cover in the car please telephone us."

So, leaving you clubs in the car overnight is a policy exclusion for them.

Having just gone through the whole insurance thing with a broken driver I ended up reading the T&C's and came across this clause.

Essentially it says that golf clubs that are taken from a vehicle between the hours of 8pm and 7am (give or take) are not covered.

My car insurance won't cover it or at least not anywhere near the amount required. I guess putting them on the home insurance as an individual item might be worth looking into?

Sorry, hadn't read Matty's post properly, basically what he says.....

That's what I ended up doing when I had a virtual Pro Shop in the boot. I actually specified the individual clubs/values. Fortunately, never had to test!

I (vaguely) remember my car insurance stating it covers a single item up to £150.
Well that's not enough for a set of clubs, but they explained each club is a separate item, so unless you have an expensive aftermarket shaft and Tiger signed head you should easily be covered for most clubs

Or not leaving them in your car overnight?

Hi,

Somebody warned me about this last year.
I looked into extending my house insurance to cover the garage, but all policies I looked at would only cover items in a garage up to £2k, and I am probably over that before putting my clubs in there. They wouldn't even quote for upping this 2k figure, they just wern't inetrested.

So I called the golf ins company and asked them (Golf care), and sure enough there was a load of exculsions for when in a car, and also in a garage. I asked how much to cover in a car or garage at any time, expecting a huge figure.........
They quoted me an extra £5. Which I was over the moon with. So give em a ring, mine are now covered whether in car or garage, whether my car is on my drive or at the office.

Cheers

Ian
