Golf in Yorkshire

Visit North Yorkshire on a regular basis and have been lucky enough to play at Ganton which is a great course. Very tough with huge bunkers and lots of gorse. May not allow visitors at weekend and/or green fees might be prohibited.

From friends in the area I know that some of the coastal courses are well regarded. In particular Scarborough South Cliff (part cliff top/part Parkland), Whitby and Flamborough Head (If you enjoy testing your game in the wind!!).

I am sure those living more local will have lots more suggestions.

Depending on where you are staying, as stated above Ganton is a fantastic course.

If staying around Leeds then Alwoodley and Moortown are considered the best and again are tough courses, I prefer Alwoodley of the two. If wanting courses which are a bit more forgiving then Headingley and Cookridge Hall are nice tracks at a decent price.

Ilkley is also a lovely course and is always in immaculate condition about 40 minutes west of Leeds.

York is a great place to stay for a weekend. Then you're not far from some great courses such as Fulford, Moortown, Alwoodly, Moor Allerton etc. you can't go too far wrong with those courses.

From South York. Just been looking at Oulton hall & Rudding park.

Set your sights higher - as others said, don't miss out on gems such as Alwoodley, Moor Allerton, Moortown, Ganton etc. Never mind the course, Alwoodley is worth it just to visit the clubhouse.

As pointed out, avoid Oulton (Its a goat track when put up against Moortown and the likes)
Rotherham GC is very nice. A testing course with some long holes. The club house is very nice also (Food was top notch when I was last there)

Do you mean South York base? or South Yorkshire base?

Sorry I meant South Yorkshire based. It'll be a four ball handicaps 11-17. I'll look into some of the courses mentioned.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hallamshire, Rotherham and if you are near Doncaster try Hickleton.

I have played Moortown , its a bit like my home club Parkstone , nice track , also played Oulton Hall, 27 holes , Resort track and also played Horsforth GC , nice little parkland track ............... all depends on your spends
