Heading to St Andrews next week for a few days. Have booked in to the Fairmont hotel and have 2 rounds of golf organised on the Torrance and Kittocks courses

Considering staying an extra day and entering the ballot to pay the Old Course before coming home

Just wanted to see what courses people would recommend should j have no luck in the ballot.

I can get a discount on the Dukes course and also can get a discounted round at Crail where I think 2 courses are playable over there

Any other recommendations for the area?

I did it some time ago but got there just before 6am and was playing at 7.20am. Obviously the earlier you are here the less time you'll need to wait, but you are also reliant on people not turning up.

At this time of year you should get onto the Old quite easily. Failing that you should look at either the New or the Jubilee. There is a 3 day ticket available which might be useful, not sure if it covers the courses you have already booked but details are on the links trust website.

The New Course is one of my favourites, always worth playing. Jubilee is good also, pretty tight/tough.

Played the Castle Course last year and loved it, although it's next door to Fairmont so you might want a change of scene!

I'd play the New personally but there's so many good courses that way (Crail, Lundin, Leven, Scotscraig, Ladybank etc etc etc) you wouldn't really go wrong with any of them.

Edit: haven't played the Dukes but looks pretty good, one I'll need to play at some point.

Joining the queue, only really works if you are a single player

The New Course is equally as good as the Old (I have played both many times)

If you can't get in the Old then definately the New, History aside I'd say its a more enjoyable course and you still get that St Andrews Buzz coming back into the town on the Final few Holes.

I agree it should be relatively easy to get onto the Old at this time of year. As an alternative, if you do miss out and are keen to play an Open venue, Carnoustie Championship is only a 45 minute drive from St, Andrews. According to the ballot on the website, it is quiet on Monday & Tuesday next week. Can't see the ballot any further into the week at the moment.

not as easy to get on the old as everyone on here is suggesting at moment - starting to see full ballot sheets , and the visitors are starting to appear as the weather starts to improve , if your unsuccessful in the ballot i suggest you get to the tee just before first light , and ask starter you wish to join up with any locals . you could also go in a ``dark time `` but no guarantee you`ll get round completed in daylight ..play new course in the morning then a dark time and knock it round the old ..happy days ....weather looking good for next week too ..light winds and getting milder . good luck and enjoy

Thanks for all the responses

Just wanted to confirm something, I seen on the old course website it says fairway mats are in use from November to March

Can anyone confirm this is the case?

I played the Eden last weekend and the mats ruling has been lifted. I guess it'll be the same for all courses now, but worth a phone call to check.
