Hi all,

8 of us heading to Royal Porthcawl for two days for a comp in May. Looking for somewhere decent to play en route on the Sunday, probably over the bridge in Wales so it's not too far to go after playing. Thinking about St Pierre or Vale of Glamorgan - any thoughts or any other recommendations for us? Celtic Manor is too expensive for 2010, and not really interested if it's not that course. Handicap range is 5 to 16

Many thanks!

Pyle & Kenfig is right next door and is as good a test as Porthcawl.

The Kendleshire or The Players is just Bristol side of the bridge and both are very good quality.

Lots of smaller clubs worth a visit on the way down Llanwern, Newport, Cardiff, Llanishen.

Spoilt for choice.

And if you're branching into Bristol territory, my home course, Thornbury, is good value for money. Will cost you £25 for a round (cheaper than that on a week day) but it's the best "non premium" (i.e. The Players or Kendleshire) course in the region that I've played...But then I might be biased ;)

May I suggest and recommend......

Beat me to it John - I would definitely recommend Southerndown - great and unique course very close to Porthcawl - which is also a fabulous course. Haven't played P&K but had a look when I was at Porthcawl - the back 9 looks very impressive, but the front less so - from what I saw, I would choose Southerndown. The other course that was recommended to me when I did a Wales trip, from the pro at Southerndown actually, was Newport. Would go for any of these above St Pierre or Rolls of Monmouth, but they are still good.

Yes John, And hope to play it with you soon !!...

I hope you're referring to the golf course?? :p

I'm on leave for a week from the 10th April if you're available? The course should be great as they get it ready for the Duncan Putter comp on the 9th, 10th - greens are normally fab - hard and fast.

PM me if you're around or need to look at any other time.

John.

Played P+K many times. Fully agree that the back 9 is by far the better loop, front 9 is a bit bland and cramped in my opinion, no links feel at all. However the greens are normally great for all 18 holes.

Many thanks for the helpful responses - I'll check those out for price and availability as well as golfing challenge/enjoyment!

Turns out our comp is Monday at Southerndown and Tuesday at Porthcawl, so that's one eliminated for the Sunday!

By the time you come to South Wales Pyle & Kenfig should be in tip top condition, all greens maintenance has been completed and the course has played excellent all year with the help of heavy investment in the course and the purchase of the new green iron. Any information you need PM me and ill gladly help you.
