Hi All,

Typically I have been playing at Gosforth Golf Club, However this weekend I have the chance to play somewhere a litte further afield then Newcastle. I fancy going up the coast towards Alnmouth (Foxton) GC or Dunstanburgh Castle GC?
Anyone in the area got any suggestions?

Cheers!

I haven't played it, but walked along part of it and bamburgh castle looks nice.

Goswick is highly rated, and 1-2 members on here. Hexham is rated, I believe.

Seahouses has some stunning holes and some poor ones, worth playing at one point though.

Foxton, Dunstanburgh or Bamburgh Castle will all be dry & playable. I can also recommend South Shields. 18 proper greens, at least 17 proper tees and play off the fairways ( preferred lies by really no need) I can't imagine another course within 50 miles is in any better condition. Green fees very reasonable too.

I've played Seahouses and agree. The holes on the other side of the road are average at best.
I had thought about both Goswick and Bamburgh Castle too, but they might be a wee bit far for this occasion. I'l take a look at Hexham.

I think I have seen that hole when I have walked past the course during a walk me and mrs did between Craster village and Low-Newton by the Sea.

Hexham is likely to be a bit claggy this time of the year.

Goswick is a fantastic links course, Wayman is a member up there I think. If you do play it make sure its not TOO WINDY, like last night. Great atmosphere in the clubhouse as well

Played Bamburgh last Friday, twas the slightly breezy day ;) Couple of mats and all the tee's are forward but all greens in play, still worth the trip though some lovely scenery .

I played Dunstanburgh last summer and wasn't impressed at all to be honest. Only a couple of memorable holes and not in the best of condition and greens were slow as treacle and that was middle of summer and despite what they say definitely not a "true links experience".

Take the extra time and travel to Goswick, it's a cracking course and any time I've played it has been in great condition.

Foxton is a good choice. Bamburgh is very good, stunning views, but only play if the wind isn't blowing. The parkland courses, Hexham, Slaley, Ponteland etc all get a bit soggy and are better April onwards. I like Burgham but Foxton and Bamburgh are more striking.

Hi All, Thanks very much for your suggestions. I'll add them all to the list of courses to play.

Thanks Wayman, I think I will take you up on the offer closer to April after I have had a few lessons so I don't embarrass myself and can truly enjoy the course.

I have gone for Dunstanburgh Castle GC, as I've been itching to play it for a while. Hopefully it won't be too blustery. I'll update how I get on tomorrow.

Cheers
Jono

So I played Dunstanburgh Castle GC today and I was a bit worried about the wind. However even though it was quite breezy it wasn't too much of a problem until the last 5 holes where it properly picked up and caused me havoc on a couple holes. I didn't play the best but it was an experience to play in the wind especially when it is having an affect on putting too!
The course was in great condition and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I look forward to returning, maybe a bit less wind next time ha.20150111_140417 (1).jpg

Before I started to play golf I used to go fishing off that cliff top. We used to park outside the castle and walk through the grounds and during the middle of the night it was real spooky. Pleased you enjoyed your game.
