Going to stay at Slaley Hall for a couple of nights at the start of September.

After reading some online reviews about the courses at Slaley Hall itself I am now starting to think I might try and find to if there are any other good courses nearby that might be worth a visit

Not looking to spend too much on green fees but if anyone knows of anyone courses that are worth a visit any info would be appreciated

Had a look at Hexham and it looks really good so definetely one I will look to play

Has anyone played the Hunting course at Slaley Hall? Reviews seem to be very mixed

Prefer the Priestman myself but both courses are quality.

It's been 2-3 years since I last played both but funnily enough I'm the other way around, I prefer the Hunting. Nice place.

As you are looking in that area it may be worth looking to see if you can get a deal at Close House. Loved by some, others are not so keen but the overall set up is pretty tasty.

If you're thinking of Close House, try a few mile further south and head over to Whickham, my home course, it's in great condition at the moment, some tricky holes and some holes with fantastic views.

Personally, I love Matfen Hall, think it takes some beating, particularly original 18.
Played Close House, the Filey I think which is supposed to be the better course. Felt very underwhelmed and in no rush to go back, don't get the attraction and all the hype of the place.

Jensen - The Colt is the better course, The Filly is the easier, blander course.

Jamie - What were the downsides to Slaley that people mentioned in reviews? We may be able to answer them. I know historically it had drainage issues but that tends to impact on the winter months rather than when you will be there.

If you're staying at slaley hall, then you really want to play 1 of the courses really.
I'd recommend the Priestman, the so called 2nd course.
Normally available on a groupon or other deals, for about £20
It's well worth it

If you want to venture outside the place, then Hexham golf club is close by.
Lovely course, normally very good condition, big thumbs up from me for Hexham

I'd not bother going anywhere else tbh
Not with 2 good courses on the hotel complex and Hexham being so close, all better than others recommended
