Off there with the family for a couple of weeks in July and looking for some recommendations please.

Got a round booked at Le Touessrok and looking to add another couple of rounds elsewhere

woo hoo, 2 years 4 months and 15 days and at last someone has asked about golf here !:D

To prevent the longest ever reply let me ask a couple of questions back:
Are you staying at Le Touessrok? will you have access to a car? what days of the week are you able to free up to play (thinking about the costs to play for tourists etc and trying to keep them low)

We've got 7 championship courses and a handful of 9 hole'rs

Have been to Mauritius twice now and returning again this year, just can't get enough of it :-). Have stayed and played at the Paradis and Tamarina. Both are lovely courses but very different. Paradis is a bit more resort style, Tamarina is a bit more shaped around the natural contours of the land. I probably prefer Tamarina, but if the Paradis was my home course, I wouldn't be complaining. Enjoy, fabulous place to play golf.

Hi @slab

We are staying near Grand Baie and I haven't decided if I will hire a car or not yet. We want to see a bit of the island and show our 12 yo and 7yo daughters something more than a beach and pool. Haven't got any planned activities on exact dates as yet as we like to be flexible/spontaneous (ha ha).

I probably won't take my own clubs just for 2/3 rounds

I have not been for a few years but love the place. From what I remember you are better off hiring a taxi for the day to see the island rather than car/tour.

Ok we'll be neighbours then as I'm right next to Grand Baie too

Good idea to get out of the hotel and see whats really going on and would've suggested that

Couldn't resist giving a line or two on each course and if you want to drop me a PM re some of the non golf stuff then feel free

Golf here is obviously set up for the visitors to the island. All the courses are championship standard and most owned/operated as resort courses. This means if staying at a hotel with a course it’s ‘mostly’ free to play on it and some have reciprocal deals with other local hotels for free/reduced golf (but look out for charges for a buggy for example)

The big warning is that if you rock up as a tourist not staying at the hotel you can easily find green fees of £100+ being advertised but there are ways to get this down considerably.

Plenty of tournaments held out here too with the biggest probably the European Seniors tour in December

It’s a tropical island so we do get rain but unless it’s a lot then the courses are usually fine i.e had to walk the back 9 last weekend as it was too soft for the buggy. July is a good month for us Scots as its still hot enough but a least it cools a bit at night so you can sleep, sea temp will be cooler too and similar to the med in July

I’ve seen people walk round the courses and have even done it a few times myself but it’s not recommended, it’s hot, it’s humid and you’re on holiday!

If I were to order them as a personal list then ‘this month’ I’d rate them as follows
1. Anahita
2. Bel Ombre/Heritage
3. Le Touessrok
4. Bel Mare Links
5. Tamarina
6. Paradis
7. Bel Mare Legends

Anahita – Everything is simply knock out tour standard at this course (inc the prices) Wide fairways, stunning vistas, practice area to die for, pretty long too and the course is always immaculate. The 18th will be a memory till you pop your clogs

Bel Ombre/Heritage – playing there this weekend and this course alternates with Anahita as a personal fav, toughest greens to read on the island, especially 17th More variety of hole design than Anahita and little to choose in their standard of upkeep

Le Touessrok – if you only play once out here then make it this one. Very tough course so play off the yellows unless you are single figures... I really mean that. A 10 min water taxi to the island course, views to make you stop playing golf, lots of smaller upturned saucer greens (compared to others) that are tough to stop on, much tighter than the two above and really intricate as the holes run round the mangroves etc really really pretty course, you will lose balls here, play off the yellows 

Bel Mare Links – Not going to keep repeating about the course standards but another cracker with a good mix of holes can be slightly soft on a couple of holes if lots of rain

Tamarina – first course I played after arriving, real African savannah stuff right down to the troop of monkeys. Drier than most courses so they have times when patches need to recover but it really is nit-picking on my part

Paradis – only play it twice a year and the most unbelievable backdrop to its golf range that you’ll ever see, not a huge fan of the thicker bladed grass used on the fairways on this course as they tend to have a lot of air in there but it won’t spoil a round

Bel Mare Legends – home of the european seniors when they come out but not sure why, I never play well here as its tight and maybe that clouds my judgement, I do like the par 3’s here and the 17th is all over water

Closest course to Grand Baie is 40 minute drive and Le Touessrok is a one hour drive (only because of the narrow winding roads)

Anyway ask away if you want to know anything else or PM if its not golfy etc

Sounds really horrible there, please pass on my condolences to all others who have to suffer by playing on such poor quality courses in an obviously horrible place. All the courses championship standard, a tropical island, you sometimes can't believe the suffering some people go through.

Plus I bet GM never do any comps where the prize is in Mauritius either, you must be really racked off;)

That's fantastic mate, really appreciate it! I will PM you about the things to do out with golf and how to get the green fees down!

I went to Mauritius a few years ago for a friends wedding - 2009 I think? We played Anahita twice off Ernie's tees, which was a mistake as I'm no where near good enough! An amazing course and barely saw a soul. Really liked the halfway "hut" girls with their cold flannels and drinks. I also saw the hotest girl I have ever seen swing a club there. Female golfer playing a round on her own in a little pair of shorts. Lovely. I doubt she'll be there if you go, but I figure it was worth mentioning!

In the bar after I don't recommend ordering a brandy and coke. I got stung for that from a "friend" and it cost £26.

Would love to go back. I have a lovely picture of the clubhouse up the 18th so will dig it out and post it.

Oh, I meant to add away from the golf I would definitely recommend the "walking with lions" and the cheetahs. An equal mix of joy and fear stroking a Lion as they walk around the park and having just a short bit of stick to defend yourself if they decide today is the day they want to maul a human and then playing ball with a cheetah and listening to it purr (which can only be described as a growl) when you stroke it. Just realised your kids might be too young to particpate, which is a shame. Perhaps one for the future.

This is fantastic, Mauritius is on the short list of venues for a few of us to play for my 40th in a couple of years.

PM sent, sorry had left office last night by the time you got in touch

Just to whet your appetite this course just makes it into the top 5 & its the 16th green...

Stayed at the Heritage Hotel and played the course about 7 times, its a tough course and the wind there makes it even more so, we hired a car for 3 days quite cheap, the drive down the mountains is good fun,
